I hope others will respond to your question. We took a river taxi from Warnemunde to Rostock. Not a good idea unless you want a slow trip that isn’t very scenic. However, we returned to Warnemunde via taxi. I can’t remember the fare, but it was reasonable and quick. You should be able to find a cab easily.

How to get to Rostock City from Warnemünde by train/tram

There are several interesting, alternative ways to get to the City Centre, all starting with the s-bahn and using exactly the same ticket. (see Ticket Prices - Local Transport' page for details) Trains depart Warnemünde every 15 mins (at 03, 18, 33 and 48 mins past the hour) throughout the day, every day.

The train you require is the S-bahn to Rostock

The first part of the route travels through high rise suburbs built to house the exploding population during the 1960's, 70's and 80's when Rostock was East Germany's 'Gateway to the World', it's only deep-sea port.

Although most directions tell you to change from train to tram at the Hauptbahnhof (main station) there are three other stations at which you can make the change, each on a different, more interesting tram route into the city.

Stations at which you can change from train to tram:-

Marienehe - 5th stop - for a 20min tram ride through green outer suburbs built during the GDR and National Socialist eras clearly showing the different architectural styles, past the former Neptune Shipyard, now a shopping centre, down the main street of the old working class apartment area and through Doberaner Platz, now a trendy Bistro and cafe precinct.

At the station go up the stairs, turn right across the overhead bridge, turn left down the slope to the tram platform, cross the tram lines and take a #1 or #5 tram to any of the three city stops - Kröpeliner Tor, Lange Straße or Neuer Markt.

Holbein Platz - 7th stop - for a 10 min tram ride past the former Neptune Shipyard, now a shopping centre, and down the main street of the old working class apartment area now home to many of our 15,000 university students.

At the station go down the stairs to street level, cross the tram lines and take a #1 or #5 tram to any of the three city stops - Kröpeliner Tor, Lange Straße or Neuer Markt

Park Strasse - 8th stop - for a 5 min tram ride past old working-class apartments and through Doberaner Platz, now a trendy Bistro and cafe area.

At the station go down the stairs to street level, turn left through the subway ,then right to the street, cross the tram lines and take a #6 tram to any of the three city stops - Kröpeliner Tor, Lange Straße or Neuer Markt

Rostock Hauptbahnhof - 9th stop - for a 5 min tram ride past villas built for the wealthy in the late 1800's but now mostly divided into apartments and offices, past the city walls and the Stein Tor - once the city's second most important gate.

Take the stairs down one level to the main concourse and then down one more level to tram platform A marked City, the sign is just above the stairway. Take a #5 or #6 tram to any of the three city stops - Neuer Markt, Lange Staße or Kroepeliner Tor.

Total travel time on all the routes is between 25 and 30 minutes depending on connections.

While taking the S-bahn from Warnemuende to Rostock is super-easy, the Hertz office is nowhere near the center of Rostock where the S-bahn would take you. It looks like you will have to take a taxi from Warnemuende. (The Hertz office at Ostsee-Park-Strasse, where I think you are going, is about 10 km or 6 miles from Warnemuende.)

Hi,

GradUT is quite correct, taxi would be the way to go. Although Lambrechtshagen is relatively close to Warnemünde you would have to go into Rostock and out again to get there by public transport.

However, most car hire firms eg. Sixt, Europcar, deliver cars to the cruise ship terminal for pick-up. Do Hertz not do this? If you have not already done so it would be worthwhile to ask.

Happy cruising :),

Thank you for the information. Do you have to reserve a taxi ahead of time, or are there some at the port? Also do you know the approx. cost to get to Lambrechtshagen (Hertz) from Warnemunde? Thank you.

Hi, Not sure how you booked your car but Hertz have a dedicated web site for cruisers and an office at the cruise terminal. Sometimes travel agents etc. in USA and UK don't know this and just go to the main office in Rostock. Details below.

https://www.hertz.co.uk/p/car-hire/germany/rostock/rostock-warnemuende-cruise-terminal

Opening hours

Mo-Sa 0800-1100

Su on request

Address

Am Passagierkai, 18119

Telephone: 0381683065

There are always taxis at the Cruise Terminal and also at the rail station nearby. If you prefer to book in advance, either by phone or on-line, here is the web site which deals with all taxi companies in the Rostock area http://www.hansetaxi-rostock.de/en/

The fare from Warnemünde to Lambrechtshagen is around 25-30€. The fares are set by local regulations and are the same whichever taxi company you use.

Happy cruising :)
