Do you have any experience with travel in China or with Chinese travelers? Will you be with a group of westerners?

We spent 4 weeks in China in a mini group of 6 and I can describe my limited experience:

On the Yangtze river boat:

Everybody was there smack on time for meals and was done 30 minutes later. Our guide in Guilin confirmed this 'fast food' custom. Food ranged from excellent to barely edible. Meat like chicken and duck was usually chopped up with the bones left in and served like that.

Queuing is only done when enforced by someone, usually an older person hired by whoever is in charge. Some of the behavior patterns are due to the severe shortages experienced by older Chinese when they were young.

One more thing, I love Qiu Xiaolong's detective novels, all set in Shanghai and written in English. Great insight into China.

We had a wonderful time, one of our best trips! The chaos in the train stations contributed to the stories we can now tell.
