Uniworld- Remarkable Rhine

Usually the first evening before dinner, you are gathered in the lounge for your introduction to the crew, and what to expect during the cruise. This is when you will find out what tours have limited capacity and which ones you have to sign up for. If there is something you really really want to do, then before going to dinner stop at the front desk / counter and sign up.

Do you have to sign up for Jewish tours

In advance?

We are taking this cruise November 5 and have signed up for the Jewish Heritage excursions. I am posting this in case somebody else is searching for the answer to this question:

There is a 30 day advance sign-up requirement for these excursions. Here is what the Uniworld website says:

Please note: This excursion is included but must be reserved no later than 30 days prior to departure. Due to security requirements the following information is required at time of booking: full name (as written on passport), passport number, passport country, date of birth, and gender. Please call our reservations department to reserve this excursion.

I'm doing Remarkable Rhine this October, and I saw the same information on the website that Tom & Judy posted. I'm going to wait until I've made final payment to sign up for the Jewish tours.

Roz:

I can't remember if I mentioned this on a different thread, but some neighbors just got off the March 22 sailing of this cruise, and took the Jewish Heritage excursions. We are having them over for dinner next week to hear more about this, but the email exchange setting up the dinner suggests that they thought everything was very well done.

That's good to know. I'll be interested in hearing the details after your dinner.

We are going on the cruise June 18. I would be interested in hearing about your neighbors cruise too. We have gotten our own air and are flying first to Vienna and then onto Amsterdam. On the return we are Going to Zurich and the home.

Also we will be posting during our trip.

Elyce: feel free to contact me by email (see the earlier message). I am happy to summarize what the neighbors tell us here on the boards, but if you and Roz want a detailed recount of everything we learn from them, that probably works better by email.

Remarkable Rhine Jewish Heritage Excursions

As I mentioned previously in this thread, we have friends and neighbors, Ron and Ellen, who were on this cruise (March 22 sailing) and signed up in advance (as required) for the Jewish Heritage Excursions. This is a very brief report about the cruise and the excursions after having dinner with them over the weekend.

There are 7 ports on this cruise; all but Oberwesel (Bacharach) have a Jewish Heritage Excursion option. Ron and Ellen took 4 of the 6 Jewish Heritage Excursions. They skipped the Jewish Heritage excursion in Cologne because they wanted to see the cathedral and some of the museums, and they skipped the excursion in Strasbourg because they were concerned that it involved too much walking for their level of mobility (as advised by either the cruise director or the Jewish Heritage specialist on board). Of the four that they took (Amsterdam, Speyer, Frankfurt and Basel), they enjoyed them very much, and given the choice to do it again, they would still choose these alternate excursions as opposed to the standard excursions. All the Jewish Heritage Excursion groups were small, mostly 8 to 16 participants. Interestingly, the majority of the participants were not Jewish. Each excursion was led by a local guide.

On this particular cruise (the second of the year) a woman named Anastasia from Milk & Honey tours was also on board; Milk & Honey is the vendor supplying the Jewish Heritage excursions. Rom and Ellen assume she will not be there on cruises after the first few. The cruise director, Anthony, is apparently Jewish and was also a resource for information on these excursions. And a Professor of Jewish Studies was on board for a bit and gave a talk on the Jewish Heritage Excursions.

We did not get a lot of detail about what is on each excursion, since it is set forth on the Uniworld website. I am going to share whatever additional details I have with anyone who wants to receive it by email. So far I only have Roz's email. You can reach me at tfreeman 987 at gmail.

We are off on a Caribbean cruise in a few days, so I may not get to this until we return.

Tom & Judy,

Thank you for the follow up. Interesting that your friends opted out of the Jewish Heritage Excursion in Cologne, as I'm thinking of doing the same thing for the same reason. After this report I'm looking forward even more to my Remarkable Rhine cruise this fall.

My cruise starts on June 18th. My husband and I will leave earlier for a stop in Vienna and a couple of extra days in Amsterdam. We are also going to Zurich after the cruise. I will be posting during the trip. I like to post some of the daily schedules and menus.

Hi all,

Mr. B. and I (and two single friends who did not know each other before the cruise) were on the April 7th cruise. There were many more Jewish participants, and the Jewish Heritage tours included between 24 and 30 guests (most but not all Jewish). I'll post more later, or you can email me at msa1289 at yahoo dot com.

I highly recommend Uniworld.

Thank you for posting! This is exciting to read. Was it, by chance, a Generations cruise? Our sailing in August is designated as such, since it's during the summer school holidays, but your week was (in some places) a Spring Break week--so I am curious. Was 30 days in advance preregistration required, for all the Jewish Heritage tours, or just some?

I believe advance registration is required for all the Jewish Heritage excursions, but then you could decide on ship to do a different one instead. So no downside to registering. But maybe MayB can correct me if this is wrong.

No, Skigal, it wasn't a Generations cruise.

We were told that advance preregistration for the Jewish heritage tours was required, so we all complied. We were told to carry our passports, although they were never shown. We did do three synagogue visits.

I have so much info rolling around in my head! I still have not done my cruise review yet. I will be doing a separate synopsis of my own tour guide recommendations. All of our Jewish heritage tours had two guides, and I was lucky with one of my choices, unlucky with the other, and I'm not sure about the third! In two cities, the two guides worked together. In one place that worked great but in the other place, it worked well when we were all together but then we split up for either brief or a bit more lengthy times, and then I was very frustrated that they didn't both have the QuietVox system available for us.

Tom & Judy

This is 100% correct!

And I'm guessing that a few cruisers could also opt into the Jewish Heritage tours in most, if not all, locations. That would depend on space. The largest total number we had was 30, and the smallest was 24. All with two guides.

Have a great time!

Internet worked fine, as far as I can recall. There was just one little area where it was not available.

Thank you May B

We have read your review.

We are looking forward to sharing information with the group. We are so thankful that the internet allows us all to share information. Years ago we were never able to do this.
