Majestic Princess Stateroom Tv limitations

I can't see if this topic has come up or been discussed anywhere? I was on the repositioning trip from Shanghai to Sydney last month to this month and for the first time ran into a problem. The staterooms are lovely and the upgrade with the TV's is fantastic though there is a problem. The only thing you can do with these tvs is watch "Princess" on demand shows/movie or view the map. I do realize for the majority of cruisers this is no problem at all so no need to read further.

You are provided with a very basic remote control that will change channels and volume, However there is no access to changing to HDMI or to Usb. No matter how many times I went to the service desk, they either didn't understand my question or told me "someone" would come to the stateroom. As no-one could work this out they came to the conclusion that you basically can't use personal devices on the tv. As a video game junky I almost lost the plot, I went directly to Samsung and bought a TV in Busan Korea and installed on top of the fridge as there is a compatible outlet right there.

As extreme as this seems there are other options that work, Bring your own Samsung remote, Bring a universal remote or bring a samsung android phone, they all work. You're outta luck if your an apple device owner, apple products do not have IR capabilities.

There's my rant, Otherwise a beautiful ship and journey. And who knows? Maybe they will remedy this for Australia.

Some have posted they did that as a solution.

Ah Fantastic, I did get a few odd looks boarding with a new TV in Busan. And bringing the apple phone, I found out the hard way that it has no IR blaster and is remote over network only using a 3rd party app. Not compatible in this situation as the tv is not online.

I'm not sure if this could apply to the Majestic or not but on the Royal Samsung TV's, I simply unplugged their HDMI input & substituted my own cable.

I found it to difficult to keep switching back & forth each time but it did work. I'm prepared now with an HDMI A/B switch for the next time I run across the situation although I read that on some ships they now feed the sets with a cat 5 cable in which case nothing will work. :(

The majestic samsungs are wired to the internal network via RJ45/Cat 5 type plug and not HDMI. I was able to unlock the TV with the remote that came with the Samsung I bought. Buy unlock I mean the tv's own dongle joystick thingy.

I think all the ships may be going to the Cat 5 setup in the future.

My movie device also has a Cat 5 output & may work although I have yet to give it a try.

I'll be prepared with an HDMI cable or RJ45 next cruise.

All of my Samsung Tv's don't require a remote to access the menu. It takes a bit of searching, but the controls are on the tv itself. Of course I wouldn't be surprised if the tv's on the ship lack those controls.

As a member of the Marconi wireless generation I will never understand HDMI or Cat 5 or RJ45, however, for our portable DVD player we disconnected the Red, Yellow and White plugs and inserted our matching coloured plugs and voila, watched our movies. :D

You are correct except the controls on the TV itself is locked on Majestic. You will get no response trying to use it and it needs to be unlocked. Only a remote can do this though look at the bright side, you don't need a code to unlock the manual tv control.

I took the 49 maiden voyage of the Majestic. The TV was normal. Something must have been done in China after we left it in Shanghai. As you know it was made for the Chinese market. I understand it was charted for a series of 3-4

Day cruises. I am guessing but probably didn’t want western tv but casino and shopping. I am guessing again it will be back to normal in Australia eventually.

floridalover, How are you going to 'prepare' w/ the RJ45 cable?  How would I hook that connection up? 😲 Any pics?

The accessible hdmi and network connection is on the right hand side of the TV set, But surely princess has corrected this by now?

I don't know if this applies to the Majestic or not but on the CB the TV were fed via an Ethernet cable. The remote did not have the capability to switch inputs but there was a toggle switch on the TV that allowed you to.

I connected my unit to the TV with HDMI cable & switched back & forth as needed for my movies. Many of their movies don't have closed captions available & all of mine do which allows me to watch a movie early in the morning without having to turn up the volume.
