Baltic Capitals 23 June 2018 and hip Replacment next week.

Recommended Posts

So the holiday has been planned for months and last week Himself got a call to say his Hip Replacement operation has been brought forward to next week. Has anyone had an operation this close to their holiday? The hospital has said he will be fine as we are not flying.

He will need to get the 'all clear' from his surgeon post op that he is fit to travel & you will need to notify your travel insurers. They may increase premiums if he is then considered a higher risk. As Sauspud says, a wheelchair may help but you will need to check if you can store it in the cabin.

Thank you for your advice. I have had a quick look and hiring a chair looks simple enough. Because his walking has been so painful for a while we had already booked the comfort tour at S.P.B. I will inform the insurance after his operation tomorrow. He may possibly be in a much better place by then than he is now.

A fold-up wheelchair will fit in your cabin, no problem.

But a motorised scooter can be problematic & some cruise lines (don't know about Marella) don't permit them unless you book a large or adapted cabin, to avoid them being left in the corridor.

"Comfort" tour in SPB is a bit of a misnomer, it's merely less hectic than the Grand Tour cos it doesn't include a couple of the lesser sights. Peterhof will be difficult though not impossible & you might find a few other difficulties with a wheelchair both on this tour and at other ports. If SPB is with a local tour operator rather than the cruise line it'll be worth letting your SPB tour operator know - they can reserve the easiest seat in the minibus & it can accommodate a stored wheelchair.

But that's life - and a shiny new hip is well worth any complications with your cruise. :)

Hope it all goes well and you both enjoy your cruise.

When you return, let us all know how it went.

We have just returned from the cruise and had a fabulous time. Himself managed really well. He had his post op check Friday and we set sail the next day. He did not use his stick at all even though we had to return home to collect it after half an hour drive. He walked better than he has for years and apart from the odd ache after a long day was pain free. Really pleased he had it done before our holiday.
