Flight Ease questions for Xmas cruise

My husband and I have booked a Xmas cruise for this year. We have never used Flight Ease. I am concerned about holiday flights and Flight Ease looks like a good way to go as we could reserve seats early for a heavy travel time. These are domestic flights and, currently, would cost $100 more (total) for both of us than booking directly with UAL. I am fine with that as my primary concern is availability/flexibility. I do not want to pay for tickets at this time as the cruise is 9 months away and we have elderly pets that may cause us to cancel the cruise. Here are my questions:

1. How is the final purchase price determined by Flight Ease?

2. Can one cancel flights prior to final payment w/o a penalty and then book with the airline directly?

Thanks for any advice or suggestions........
