Hotel shuttle to long beach cruise port

Need to stay the night before our Carnival cruise in Long Beach at a reasonably priced hotel that will shuttle us to the cruise port.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Jim

I suggest looking at San Pedro for hotels . They are cheaper than Long Beach itself unless you want to stay on the old queen Mary ship.

Be very careful of cheap hotels in Long Beach. Some areas are very dicey.

Queen Mary, Maya, Renaissance, either Hyatt, Hotel Current are good choices. Could try the Crown Plaza in San Pedro.

Also look at the Doubletree Marina and the Holiday Inn in San Pedro.

I guess it's time again to post my standard answer:

There is a very limited area of Long Beach in which you want to stay...and, therefore, a limited number of hotels.

"A" List: The BEST places to stay are the Hyatt, Westin, Renaissance and Hyatt Centric (also known as Hyatt at the Pike) …These put you right in the heart of the tourist area with very convenient walks to restaurants, shops and attractions and easy access to the free "Passport" shuttle...and those ARE the nicest hotels in town. Doesn't necessarily mean they are higher priced, though...and you can often get a real deal via Priceline...

"B" List: Slightly further away, but still in decent walking distance, is the Hilton. Just across the bridge (on the same side of the channel as the Carnival Pier) are the Marriott Residence Inn Downtown and the Maya Doubletree...

"C" List: Slightly outside the prime area and/or not necessarily the nicest hotels for one reason or another, but options if all else fails are the Marriott Courtyard and the Best Western Long Beach Convention Center...The Queen Mary is across the bridge ...and right next to the Carnival Terminal...however, I am not a big fan of the Queen Mary--unless you are on there for nostalgia's sake...It's not exactly a first class hotel by today's standards--the rooms are small, condition questionable, etc.

Getting to ANY of these hotels from LAX, you'd either have to take a taxi, car service or a shuttle...Try Super Shuttle or Prime Time Shuttle or Super Shuttle's Execucar...From hotel to pier, some of these hotels may have free shuttles, but policies change time to time, so I would check individually with the hotel...All would be a very short taxi ride from the Carnival Pier...From the Maya Doubletree, Residence Inn Downtown or Queen Mary, one could even walk...LAX is 20 miles from the San Pedro World Cruise Center, 23 miles from the Carnival Terminal in Long Beach…could take anywhere from a half an hour to an hour depending on day, time and traffic…

One word of warning: Do NOT go looking for bargains outside of this short list of hotels...Long Beach is a BIG city...there are lots of different areas, some better, some worse...some not so close to the port or the tourist areas...That bargain hotel MAY tell you it's near the Convention Center or near the port...but it may not be...it may be in an undesirable area or location. You want to have a pleasant stay--stick to this list.

This area of Long Beach means you will have a large choice of restaurants nearby, you will have nice shops and picturesque scenery and places to walk and enjoy...You will be close to sites like the Aquarium and the Queen Mary if you want to have a little sightseeing... If you decide to stay at a San Pedro hotel, rather than the Long Beach ones recommended by Steve, any shuttles will take you to the Port of LA. Not sure if you can get a ride provided by the hotels there to the Carnival berth in Long Beach. So most likely you'll have to get a taxi or pay for a shuttle (shared or private). In those cases, make doubly sure that the driver understands which port you need to go to.

We stayed at the Hotel Current in 2013 for our cruise to Hawaii and it was a great place to stay. Not fancy but nice and for $149 we got our room, breakfast, transportation to and from the port and parking for free. That is less than we pay when we stay in New Orleans for a 7 day cruise. We are cruising back to Hawaii next December and we will stay there again. Good luck.

This is such a simple question.

Start with the Hotel Maya (a DoubleTree) and the Queen Mary. They are on the same spit of land as the cruise port. Look at the map below. You can see the Carnival cruise ship under the "M" in Queen Mary and see where the Maya is in relation to the ship.

At the top of the screen you can see the Hyatt Centric and Westin. The Hyatt Regency and Renaissance are in between those two, so all are grouped together and the Best Western Plus is just above the Westin.

Those are you best choices.

Excellent! I booked in there a couple months ago for a May 2017 sailing. I like to get things done well in advance. Glad to hear a couple of people recommending ;)

I don't really know too much about the hotel itself...except, on the whole, I've usually had good experiences with Marriott Courtyards...

The reason I wouldn't include this one in my recommendations is that it's nowhere near the cruise ports...It's over 12 miles from this hotel to the Carnival port and over 16 miles to the World Cruise Center. It's north of the LGB Airport and there's nothing much around there...nothing!

We were also looking at this hotel to stay pre-cruise in September. Do you know if you must book a special fly and cruise package to get free airport shuttle and free port shuttle, or is this available with any room booking? We will be arriving into Long Beach Airport after 8pm the night before our cruise and will be cruising out of the San Pedro Port the next morning. Do you know if the shuttle operates that late at night?

Why not call the hotel and ask them those questions, they will be able to give you the correct information.:)

The hotel is only a couple of years old. It shares its parking lot with The Habit (greater hamburgers), California Fish Grill, Starbucks, and a chain sandwich shop, perhaps Phillies steak (we always go to The Habit).

Due to its proximity to the Long Beach Airport , it probably offers a free shuttle to/from it, but not the port.

Thank you for the helpful information. I would imagine a cab ride to the cruise port won't be too horribly expensive.

Taxi is approximately $35 or Uber is approximately $15.:)

That would have been my guess as a cab from my house to LGB is around $20 depending on the traffic and the port is quite a bit further away.

Uber sounds like the way to go!

Here's the hotel's info about cruise rates:

http://www.goldensailshotel.com/long_beach_cruise_hotel_free_parking/

the hotel is fairly old, but appears to be well maintained--as a local that lives less than a mile away, I drive by it a lot and used to be there frequently for activities in the ballroom (cotillion classes for my kids). Have no idea regarding condition of rooms.

I have called in regards to a May 2017 cruise and I have been told that they are going thru a sale and they don't know if they can do a park and cruise. Not sure if they will do a shuttle without you parking a car. Definitely call and get an update.

Bruin Steve,

Thank you for that excellent list of recommended hotels.

I am browsing where to stay in LB in September to join a Princes Cruise back to Australia.

I had looked at the Holiday Inn Long Beach Downtown 1133 Atlantic Ave, but your comments suggest I look at some of your "A" List instead.

Having never been in LB before the Holiday Inn is a little bit out of better areas.

Any thoughts?

Cheers.

Harry
