hello is it walkable from the port to the Promenade? are there cash machines near by ?

Our cruise company (Fred Olsen) ran a shuttle bus into town. It was not miles out, but not sure it would be practical to walk - the prom is lengthy though, so suggest you would be better walking when you get there. Not a long way out from what I remember (possible about 2 miles) you could check on Google Earth, which I find very useful when researching ports.

Money machines are available in town (main road is parallel to the prom and shuttle stopped on the main road). We got local currency from an ATM in the main Road, near the shuttle drop off.

Nothing to write home about IMO, but was OK for a stroll through the town and back along the beach the first time we called there. You can get a taxi up a nearby hill to see ruins of a fort or whatever it was and get a view over Agadir from there. The town is just modern concrete buildings and there are a number of AI hotels to the far side of the beach. There is an area of tourist cafes/restaurants on the prom and also an area nearer the the drop off point on the prom which is a locals area - we enjoyed walking along the locals area to see them (and especially the children) enjoying themselves. The tourist area was pretty boring, overpriced with very slow service when we tried to but a drink, but some would like it.

On our second cruise which called there we took the ship's trip to Taroudont (about an hour inland), largely for the drive inland as much as anything as we are well travelled in North Africa. Taroudant is more traditionally Moroccan, with a walled medina, but we would have preferred not to be tripped. Not that easy to get to independently though and we were quite time limited, so we had no regrets about going with the ship's trip. I would never consider taking a trip to Marakesh as the journey is so long (about 3 hours each way I think), but some people do.

A caution. If you book a taxi to take you on a tour, write the agreed to price and the currency on a piece of paper and have the driver sign/initial it. Ours talked to us in dollars but wanted the same amount in Euros when we returned to the ship ... we reminded him that he’d agreed to USD and that was the end of the problem.

yes Im a regular on Trip adviser , finding an honest and open tour company who are open about cost and itinerary is proving difficult , We spent 5 days in Marrakesh last year so dont really want to take a tour where we need to travel far , so Im quite happy having a local wander

I can see you have had some problems on TA - we both seem to use the same names on both forums. Our opinion is that anywhere is fine for a day and on our first visit to Agadir we did want to see the hotel area as we had considered a winter holiday there. It seems to us though that it is largely a place where people go for a hotel based holiday, so not our sort of place. It is a shame so much of North Africa is becoming a no go destination. We have had a lot of holidays in Tunisia in the past and done a lot of travelling by train, local buses and even shared taxis. We had often gone off and stayed in hotels elsewhere for a night or more. Once we hired a car for a week from Sousse and went off to the south for a few days. Much better than the one night intensive excursion offered by the tour companies and we were made so welcome by the local people. Would not want to do that now though, even if travel restrictions are lifted. You used to be able to just walk along the coast and drop in at a hotel for a drink, but the AI enclaves have put a stop to that.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Marrakesh. A few years ago we spent two weeks in a hotel on the edge of the town (not far outside the walls) and walked in/out a lot through the non touristy parts. so we really felt we saw something different Again, perhaps we will look elsewhere now, but we are in our late 60's and there are other parts of the world we still want to see, so perhaps not a bad thing.

Enjoy your day and also the rest of the cruise,

Barbara
