HI!!! We have a tour booked one day....a trip to Universal....

BUT after Universal...we wouldn't mind hitting a mall...or shopping area

OR in the AM before our Flight we have time as well.

Any neat areas to shop that are not EXPENSIVE EXPENSIVE??

Or...a standard mall near by the LAX area? We have rented a car for 2 days :)

Thanks!!!

OR....if we have a couple of hours to spare before our Flight....what touristy thing can we check our near LAX?

Thanks again!!!

There are 2 malls close by LAX right off the 405 Freeway.

The Promenade at Howard Hughes Center (website: http://www.hhpromenade.com)

and The Westfield Fox Hills mall (website: westfield.com/foxhills)

If you check both websites you can see which stores each has to offer.

Universal also has some stores, a movie theater complex and resturants in their "City Walk" area (Hard Rock Cafe, Tony Roma's, Bubba Gump Shrimp and many more) ajoining the Amusement Park.

Unless you want to drive into the San Fernando Valley to shop (opposite direction from LAX) I would check these two out.

Hope this helps and have a great trip!

You could also easily stop by the Del Amo Fashion Mall in Torrance on your way from San Pedro to LAX (esp. if you are driving up Sepulveda/Pacific Coast Hwy. instead of taking the freeway). One of the largest mall complexes in the country. There is also a small shopping area that is next to the Convention Center in Long Beach if you want to detour over that way after getting off the ship and before heading to LAX.

Not sure when your flight is, but you may want to note that you'll have to allow some time to get to LAX (usually lots of traffic around that area on the 405 just about all day long plus time to get through security).

Not too much touristy stuff in that area. The airport, rental car agencies and regular businesses.

I wouldn't recommend the Fox Hills Mall. Not a very safe area. Since you're going to Universal Studios, you'll be near the City Walk, which is up there too. Here's a site to check out the stores:

Where is your hotel? Maybe we can suggest a mall or shopping area near that.

Just checked and you'll coming within the next few days, right? Make sure you bring your umbrella. The forecast is for rain between Thursday night and Saturday. Temperatures are scheduled to be in the 50s, with lows in the 40s, here in the San Fernando Valley where Universal City is located. Of course, our weather is pretty changeable (today was in the 80s and very windy).

Sorry, I can't help but seriously "jump in" at this point...

(Knowing where to shop is a part of my job)...

If you can check back in here, and give me (us) a general, time frame, where you are going, etc....

Also, WHAT do you want to shop for, what kind of shopping experience?

(Mall, boutiques, funky, cool, high end, what kind of items? - clothes, window shopping, electronics, unique to LA items?)

If you can get back to me, before you leave, then I'm fine with being your own personal "shopping concierge" here...

I'm at all of the various shopping malls, and boutique areas, etc. at least once a month for my work, so let me know...

PS Fox Hills Mall is great! (in general, I just got two pairs of shoes there, that I couldn't find anywhere else);)

In general also...

Just random ideas...

Things to see around or near LAX

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=500138

Marina Del Ray Hotel

http://www.marinadelreyhotel.com/index.htm

This is great if you want a more "relaxing" experience.

You have great views of the boats and marina.

You have quick access to Chace Park to walk around…

http://beaches.co.la.ca.us/BandH/Marina/chacepark.htm

Then around the "bend" of the marina, you have Fisherman’s Village

http://www.visitthemarina.com/

Great restaurants and views, strolling, and a bit of shopping…

Closest to LAX…

#3 Culver City/The Culver Hotel

Check out my report and info here:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=509495

This is a great area if you are into really old original Hollywood history…

And/or want a place with a lot of entertainment/restaurants in very close walking distance.

It would also be a very quick (by LA standards – 5 minutes by cab, 15 minutes by bus) ride to Venice Beach (south end) along Washington Boulevard…

Or to Hollywood (15 minute cab ride, maybe 30 minute by bus)…

Also, give us an idea of your logistics:

How long are you in LA for?

Are you staying in a hotel somewhere?

Near LAX? Near Universal? Near the pier? It makes a difference...

Anyway, supposing you are at Universal but heading back south with your rental car...

My favorite shopping center would be the "Grove"...Located at Third and Fairfax, next to CBS Studios...

http://www.seeing-stars.com/Shop/Grove.shtml

http://www.farmersmarketla.com/

Or, if you don't want a generic mall and would rather have really funky shops and boutiques, head to Melrose in West Hollywood:

http://www.seeing-stars.com/Shop/Melrose.shtml

There's also a more traditional mall in this part of town...the Beverly Center:

http://www.beverlycenter.com/

This stuff is all in the West Hollywood/Beverly Hills part of LA...upscale/trendy...a real LA and nowhere else experience...

But, it's not near the Airport or the harbor...it IS between Universal and LAX though, so might be on your way from one to the other...

Near LAX...I don't really like Fox Hills...but it's not really that bad a neighborhood...I've been there many times...just not a great mall...

Close to LAX but South of LAX is Manhattan Village...Nowhere near as large as Del Amo, but closer to the airport:

Good luck...
