cable car in Madeira

Recommended Posts

Hawkeye's map shows it, though it does depend how far along the quay your captain finds a parking spot.

But it's a fair walk.

There are a couple or three small retro buses (like those in Jellystone and the Going-to-the-sun road) which operate an inexpensive (€2 pp?) shuttle to the cablecar station from part-way along the quay, just past a gateway.

I've modified Hawkeye's map to start at the pick-up point.

Those buses don't offer a service back to the ship, but at the end of our day we jumped into a tuk-tuk in town near the waterfront to get back to our ship.

IIRC €4 for the two-passenger tuk-tuk.

It is truly a "hike" from the port. DW and I love long walks so have done it (twice) but its not for those who can't handle multiple miles per day. A shuttle bus into town....or a taxi....make sense for those wanting to limit their walking.

Also beware of taking the sleds down from the top. The sleds are fun (a bit touristy and overpriced) but your sled ride ends at the middle of the steep hill. Walking back down (into town) from the end of the sled ride might appear easy (it is all downhill) but parts of the walk (on streets and sidewalk) are very very steep. Steep downhill walks put a tremendous strain on one's knees....especially for those who have some arthritis. There is sometimes a taxi waiting at the end of the sled ride....and although they overcharge to take you down the hill....it might save you a ruined knee :). We do speak from experience. DW had a knee problem for several years when we made that steep descent....and she felt something go inside her knee. Within a year she had total knee replacement...and some of the knee damage was likely accelerated by that downhill stroll.
