Cinque Terre from Livorno

Let´s say it like this: According to google maps it´s app. 140 km from Livorno to Monterosso (the last of the five villages of Cinque Terre).

By train... you first have to take the port shuttle, then the local bus to the train station, then at least two different trains...

Wouldn´t do it on your own. You might want to go on an organized tour (either by ship or private). But I wouldn´t do it out of Livorno - La Spezia is the better port for Cinque Terre.

IF (and that's a big if, since getting to the train station at Livorno requires some work) you can make it to the train station in time for the 8:01 train to La Spezia, you could be in Cinque Terry by 10:30 AM. The next connection doesn't get you there until an hour later. Your best bet for making this train is to take a taxi from the port (about €25 to go three miles but you can share with others). The shuttle to the bus option will take too long.

For the return, you need to allow at least 30 minutes to get from the Livorno station to the port, plus another 30 minutes of "pad" time. Your on-board time will be 6:30, so you'd need a train that gets to Livorno no later than 5:30 PM.

Also, for a trip like this it's always wise to take the next-to-the-last train that would get you there in time, for safety's sake.

The last return connection from La Spezia at 4:16 puts you at Livorno at 5:20. This would mean leaving the villages of Cinque Terre no later than 3:15 PM. There is one later connection that arrives at 5:48, a bit of a push but it could work in an emergency.

So in the end if everything works right you'd arrive around 10:30 AM and depart at 3:15 PM.

  • 3 weeks later...

From Livorno its tight concentrate on two villages only Vernazza & Manarola or Riomaggiore .

Best port for visiting the CT is in fact La Spezia, not obvious why more cruise boats do not go there . Livorno is really best port for Firenze, Lucca & Pisa .

Last year we took the ship tour from Livorno to CT. Got to see three villages. We don't always take ship tours but this was one time when we were happy to let them figure out the timing.

We also normally do not take ship tours, but we did do this tour with Celebrity, and we’re glad that we did. The connections would be too tight to do it on our own from Livorno.
