Leixoes - Porto

Recommended Posts

Will be stopping at Leixoes next year and can find very little info on this board.

Looking for a tour guide (taxi driver, even accepted) for a few hours tour in the morning and then drop off at Sandeman's or Taylor's Port for visit and long, leisurely lunch and then return to port. Any recommendations?

I can't give any recommendations but in case it helps we did this from the port. From memory the train was about 3 minutes walk from the dock and we bought an all-day ticket for about €6 (in 2013) and just walked around. The boat tour was around €10. All the best, Tony

It is a very nice port. We spent a week there a few years ago. Two days in Porto and five touring the Douro Valley. We liked the boat tour very much. We did not plan to go. It was on our way to board a cruise ship in Civ. Got a great one way fare from Toronto so we snagged it on a lark. So glad that we did.

If you have a full day you might want to consider renting a car and driving into the Douro Valley. It is quite beautiful and there are numerous wineries that you can stop at. Plus a few small towns. The town is walkable. IF you are do spend time in town don;t walk by the MacDonalds. Go in. It has some wonderful stained glass from the buildings previous life/heritage. Has to be the most impressive MacDonalds we have ever seen-anywhere.

We have been to this port, twice, and really enjoy Porto. It is difficult to give independent travel advice since there are several docking (or even tendering) options in that area. But from the most common docking pier, one can walk to a nearby Tram station and simply take the Tram/train into Port. Near the port its a ground level Tram/Train, This line becomes a subway as it enters Porto...and has stops on the other side of the river near the many Port Wine houses.

The Tram is modern and very fast and used to cost less than 2€ (one-way) into nearly any part of town. Along the river (on the same side as the Port Houses) there are lots of cafes and restaurants. Love this port. One warning about the cruise lines. Most want to sell you their overpriced excursions and some will even push overpriced transfers (usually by bus). We have been on some lines that do not inform their passengers of the inexpensive and efficient local transport options. Over the years we have heard numerous passengers saying things like "if we had only known," or "why don't they give us any decent local information," etc etc. It is a bummer. There is usually a local tourist office representative at ports that will happily dispense free info....but for those that have booked other options this is too little too late.
