taxi verses the bus up to the gardens in Madeira

Hi can anyone advise me the price of getting a taxi from the port in Madeira up to the tropical gardens. There is 4 of us, so not sure if it will be cheaper to get return in a taxi or go on the local bus.

Also which gardens did you prefer.

We assume that the OP is already aware there is a nifty Cable Car that can get you up that mountain to the vicinity of the gardens. The views from the cable car are quite spectacular....and it is another option.
