DO WE NEED A PRIVATE GUIDE FOR HERCULEUM OR GET ONE AT ENTRANCE ?

You can easily do Herculeum on your own without a private guide. Key is to do reading ahead of time.

A few years ago we did the exact same thing. I used rainbowlimos and was very pleased with the service. I do not recall any guides available at Herculaneum, but I also was just interested in walking around myself.

Joe Banana Limos are excellent. They are well known on cc (aka italytoursharing.com for group tours). I can recommend them as my first 2 cruises I used private tours. Very good. I believe their home base is Sorrento.

We used Domenico from Private tour in Italy and he is simply the best for the Amalfi Coast! (We also used him in other ports). Both my kids used him while on their honeymoon in Italy and my Niece just used him in August. I have also referred him to several co-workers and nothing but the best!

Domenico is very personable, has great command of the English language and very knowledgeable! He also has connection to some of the best guides available and access to front of the line at most of the popular attractions.

You will not be disappointed with his services!

Just as b cruise stated, italytoursharing only ask for a credit card to hold your reservation. You pay in euros at the end of the tour. I did pay in advance to Viator once and Walks of Italy, but they a had a cancellation policy that would refund your money. In regards to how far in advance you should pay can depend on how popular the tour is. We did a tour of the Colosseum with Walks of Italy last November and I booked the tour 3 months prior.

I personally will not pay in advance, except for the ship tours or through a large site like Viator or otherwise that has a clear way to cancel.

Giving a CC number to secure the reservation is OK, but I know full well what the cancellation policy is before I book, and normally will not book anything that can't be canceled at least a day or two in advance.

tour operator backed down --was just giving options ---really ?? --does not need payment

seems like others doing the same - requesting payment -
