ilv4cruising Posted September 25, 2018 #1 Share Posted September 25, 2018 We will be in Punta Arenas in January and we want to take the ferry to Magdalena Island to see the penguins. I know the ferry can be 2 hours. The trip is offered either early morning (getting to the island probably around 10 or 10:30) or in the early afternoon (getting to the island around 3:30-4:00). Is there a better time of day to see penguins (e.g. do the adults go out in the morning to fish)? Thanks,
joybook Posted September 26, 2018 #2 Share Posted September 26, 2018 Can't answer which time of the day may be better but we did the morning one a year or so ago (in late December) and would not have missed it for anything - great experience - literally tens of thousands of penguins. While there is a roped off walkway and you are expected to remain on the walkway, the penguins don't seem to take too much notice of that and are always walking around with you. Don't miss the experience.
Rare RachelG Posted September 26, 2018 #3 Share Posted September 26, 2018 We did this tour a few years ago. It was in late morning, and there were penguins everywhere. I don't how many there are in the afternoon, but there were plenty in the morning.
andrek Posted September 26, 2018 #4 Share Posted September 26, 2018 Is it possible to do this tour on your own? How do you get the ferry and from the ferry to the Penguins?
joybook Posted September 27, 2018 #5 Share Posted September 27, 2018 We did a ship's excursion. The penguins will meet you at the dock. You literally land amongst them.
GJCruiser Posted September 27, 2018 #6 Share Posted September 27, 2018 From an internet search it appears the ship reserves all the means of transport for their excursions to the island on the day they are in port. The ferry ride visit is marketed by Princess at $200 per person. If you could go on your own it is ~$75 per person.
Bella0714 Posted September 27, 2018 #7 Share Posted September 27, 2018 I think both GV Tours and Solo Expediciones both go to Magdalena Island for less than $200/pp even on days that ships are in port.

On Christmas Day 2016 the Solo Expediciones excursion was $88 per person. Passengers were from two ships: Princess and Seabourn.

Good to hear. Hopefully my current information gathering is wrong.
