I just got back from my first sailing in a solo cabin. It was very easy to meet other solo cruisers in the lounge. We were on a Baltic sailing so it was mostly an older crowd. We met more people our age in the casino and disco! I'd definitely do it again.

I haven't stayed in one myself, but I'm part of a very active roll call for an upcoming cruise on the Bliss, where there is a large contingent of singles who are already "meeting" each other online. Some of them met on previous cruises and planned this one together; others are new to the group. And the majority of them are "older," as in 40+.

My friend and I are 50 & 51 and most of the solos were older than us! I think it really depends on the sailing. We were on a Baltic cruise so the entire ship was an older demographic than you'd see in the Caribbean.

I'll be sailing solo and staying in one of those studio cabins on NCL in January 2019.  I've sailed solo on DCL, RCL, and HAL and all of them have some sort of single/solo cruisers meet & greet so there is ample opportunities to meet up with other solo cruisers if that's your thing. Based on what I read for NCL studio cabins they host gatherings in the solo lounge everyday to arrange for group, couple or single dinner reservations and to discuss happenings around the ship. I'm looking forward to my upcoming cruise to see what NCL has to offer.

I just returned from a studio solo on the Epic.

There was a solo host who worked at getting everyone mingling and off to meals and shows together.

There were always cookies and other snacks.  They had a coffee machine that made cappuccino and other coffees.  Since I don't drink coffee, I just used the hot water to make tea.  There was a bartender in the evenings.

My only real problem was the gatherings were too popular. I think they said there were 100 people at the first mixer.  Being an introvert, I just turned around when I saw that herd.  I started to go to one meal with them but there were over 50 people so I went to the buffet.

I did hang out in a corner of the lounge and read a couple times a day and eventually found people to talk to and even eat with at times.  Since I almost never initiate a conversation, this was a major achievement.

I was in a studio cabin on the Getaway in September, 2018.  We had a very large solo presence and it was very easy to meet people.  However, I'm an extrovert so I get how it might be intimidating for someone who is not.  I highly recommend going to the solo meet-ups even if you are not in a studio cabin because it was a great way to meet others.  We often self-organized to hang out during the day and in the evenings as well as joined up for excursions.

I look forward to sailing on the Breakaway next month (9/27/2019) and attending the solo gatherings again!

If they had over 100 people at the mixers, it would be really hard to meet people.  Even 50 people at a meal would be hard.

Hello Draketti - After reading your post, I was surprised to see you live in Edgewood.  I grew up there and now live in Villa Hills/Ft. Mitchell area.  Can't believe we are so close to each other!

In fairness I should have also added that after the crowd left for meals, there were often a small group left behind that was much easier to deal with.  I should have also added that they had a bar tender there for 2 or 3 hours each night and that attracted a few people too.  Since I don't drink, I forget how important that is to others.

Small world indeed.  I wonder if we know of each other in real life.  I grew up in Erlanger.

Well most of the dining rooms didn't seat tables of more than 10-12 so it wasn't so bad.  Usually at the 1st few meetings, they would go around the room and have us introduce ourselves as an ice-breaker.  Then if we saw each other throughout the day, we at least knew each other.  I was at Amber Cover and had another solo approach me and the group I was with and we ended up hanging out together most of the cruise because we had a lot in common.  Yes there was a bar-tender for about 2 hours.  Our bartender was always late and had a crowd waiting for him :)

Hi, I'm planning my first solo cruise later this year - probably NCL as I've been with them before (with my daughter) and they have a good pricing policy for solos.  But the ship I'm looking at, NCL Star, doesn't have solo studios or a lounge for solo travellers.  This is because (I understand) it's one of the smaller ships.  Does anyone know whether there will still be organised opportunities to meet up with other solos eg meet and greet, a solo co-ordinator etc?

I did the Jewel once and there weren't any of the solo things like on my other sailings (Epic, Breakaway 2x, Escape 2x last year).

Note that even if you are in a non-studio you can still attend the solo gatherings. A few times I upgraded from a studio to a balcony the week before.

To me the only drawback with the studio was less space for unpacking; I found it comfortable and slept great in it.

Thanks for this.  I'm going for an outside room now but will look at joining in with the solo gatherings.  It's good to know I can still do this.

Hi There - going to the Caribbean on the Jade in March, sharing a cabin with a friend. No studio cabins on this ship but was wondering if they still do the singles meet and mingles or is it just on the ships with studio cabins?

Breakingloose,

The easiest way to get the answer to that question is go to the NCL site and their cruise search under Explore.  Then choose one person.  Next select the port you want and the room type you want.  You can then choose the dates you wish too.

Using just the port and cabin, I came up with 17 cruises on the Breakaway and the Escape.
