Hotel/cruise transfer Galveston, rental car?

we are cruising out of Galveston for the first time. Never been there, have no idea where to start. We will fly in a day or two before (probably Hobby) and likely the day after the cruise. Looking for a nice hotel for before and after, and I would rather just taxi to cruise terminal. In Pt Canaveral we rented a car in Orlando and dropped it off near port. Is that a possibility? So, hotel suggestions? Near port? Airport transfers? Or rental car? Or should we extend our vacation a few days after and check out Galveston?

Taxi is pretty expensive from Hobby to Galveston. Try Uber or one of the shuttle services. Cruise Connection does $22pp from Hobby to Galveston hotels or the pier but does only run at scheduled times.

Agree that Harbor House is a great place to stay and only 4 blocks from the RCI pier, 2 blocks from Carnival.

Galveston Trolley runs from the Strand (2 blocks south of pier/Harbor House) to the beach for $1, and connects for free to another trolley that runs along the seawall. Not designed for luggage, so not a good option if you choose a hotel on the beach to get to the cruise port. Lots of restaurants, hotels, Walmart, along the seawall. Wine shop on north side of Strand.

We flew in 2 days pre cruise to Hobby. We used Galveston Limo shuttle to take us to Enterprise car rental, from what they told me this is the only car rental on the island. Our hotel was the Holiday Inn Resort on the Seawall. The day of the cruise we dropped the car off and took Enterpises free shuttle to the cruise port. After the cruise we used Galveston Express for a ride to Hobby, from there we called the Drury Inn for a free shuttle ride to their hotel where we spent another night before flying home the next day.

Last time we cruised, we stayed at the Lost Bayou Bed & Breakfast. Wonderful place and wonderful host. He even dropped us off at the cruise terminal. We are staying there again for our cruise in August and will be taking advantage of the free parking included with the stay (parking is at a secured lot for the train museum).
