How much cash for additional tips?

How much cash would you bring for a 7 day cruise for additional tipping? And who would you tip and how much. Like I know the bag porters are $2 a bag, etc. This is our first cruise. We don't want to break our bank over tipping but we also don't want to be cheap. We know the folks on the ship work hard. We have two kids who will be in kids club. Should we tip them extra too?

Tips in addition to gratuities charged are optional. We usually give $20-$30 to the room steward for a 7 - 10 day cruise, if service is exceptional. Other than porters at airport and cruise port, we also give tips to tourist guides and drivers. For 4 hours tour on a bus, we give $10 to the guide and $5 to the driver.

We'll spend between $100 and $150 on gratuities for porters, excursion guides, and room service servers for a weeklong cruise.

Interesting replies. For cruises in Caribbean or States, we do 20% for cab, $5 pp for shuttle driver, $5 per bag with Porter, $2 room service for am coffee, $5 room service if order lunch or snacks, $2 per bar waiter $1 per drink for server if show or casino, $5 per person per hour for tour guide, $10 pp to driver for 4 hours or under $20 for longer, $100 for private cars per person, $30-50 for steward depending on service of week, $100-$150 for butler if we're in suite. Have been know to give out $20 or so to miscellaneous staff if they go above and beyond. These guidelines we use for Carnival, MSC, Princess, Royal adjust up for Celebrity, Viking, Azamara when we sail with them. Safe journeys.

In addition to the above, I usually tip my dining room servers $10 per day for dinner and $5 day for breakfast/lunch. They are always so good and attentive. I prepay gratuities and would never remove them.

I want to work for you

LOL I do have a low turnover rate. Actually I worked at resorts in summer as a kid and waitressed all thru college, med school and while getting my PhD, I have never forgotten those that were so generous not those who were not. Great lesson to learn.

The auto-charged gratuities are sufficient.

Stevedores on the pier and room service would be the only ones you would need to be concerned about.

Servers for dinner are only serving you once a day and if you figure out what they make are doing rather well. If they werent they would not leave their families for 6 months at a time to work on a ship.

Servers at dinner aren't just serving us once a day. They work breakfast and/or lunch as well either cleaning tables at the buffet or sit down meals in the MDR

The service hasn't really been expectional on the last 2 carnival cruises so we end up just tipping the bartenders and let the auto grat cover everyone else. Off the ship, probably about another $100 or so for porters, cabs, excursions. Have a great time!

Easily your best post in months.... OP, regardless of the direction you get here, do as you see fit, not what others are TELLING you to do. If you think service is worth some extra dead presidents then go ahead and tip, if not then don't. We almost always do tip more, but I would not presume my views on yours as some have done here.

Took the words right out of my mouth:)

Lol...actually hired an office manager for one of our practices about 15 years ago when I met her on a cruise. She stayed when I sold that one last year and new owners love her.

I feel people talk a big game when it comes to tipping but do they really.

I tip porters, room service, excursion people and that is it. Don't drink alcohol. My choice

I agree. I already pay $180 in tips for the week (if I don't buy anything else, which I do). I have given extra to those who were really excellent, but I don't do that often. Some remove those gratuities. So I feel completely fine knowing I left my tips.

I also feel many people exaggerate what they give. Good for those who do give extra though. The workers do appreciate it.
