Neighborhoods for Vancouver Hotel with Fairly Early International Departure?

Recommended Posts

We are staying one day in Vancouver post 14 day cruise with a departure the next day at 8:45 am on a flight to the US. I am thinking it makes the most sense to stay near the airport as we will have to get up fairly early due to the international flight and we will have copious amounts of luggage due to the long cruise, so not relishing the idea of going on a train or a cab in rush hour. But I am open to other's input and suggestions. We are traveling in a group of four. We are not renting a car due to the short time, cost is not a huge concern as it is only for one night, we are open to anything from the Days Inn to the Hilton that is convenient. Any specific hotels by the airport that are recommended?

Most people will tell you all the tourist attractions are downtown and that is true if you are after the iconic places to visit. Morning traffic is also heading into the city and not out.

The Granville Island hotel is not "near" the airport, however it gets you out of the downtown core and in to a very nice walk-able area that many visitors like.

Close to the airport usually means Richmond.

The River Rock Casino in Richmond is a short taxi ride to the airport. As the name suggests it is on the river and has a casino.

The Richmond town centre has a very Asian feel to it. Within one to two blocks of the Raddison Vancouver airport are a number of Asian shopping centers. Fairly new.

A number of other hotels like the Sheraton Vancouver Airport, Vancouver Airport Marriott, Hilton Vancouver Airport are walk able and within a few blocks or a large shopping centre and a number of very good asian restaurants.

Thank you for the suggestions! I found a good price at the Fairmont, you can't get any closer than that and the luxe accomodations will make the end the trip a little less sad. Then we can drop off luggage and take the train downtown to sight see.

We would like to visit the suspension bridges and Granville Island, I think. Wish we had more time to more explore.

You should grab it, in my opinion. We stayed there once for an early flight and it was magnificent. Also, not sure if you know that you will have pre-clearance to the U.S. at YVR, so that's another reason you will need to be there even earlier than you might have planned. Working backwards, the very latest I feel you should be downstairs in the airport is 6:45 am, but we would go even earlier than that. Lines for security and for the U.S. pre-clearance can get pretty long.

Directly in the terminal building. Great option. I have had dinner there a few times and excellent. If you like airplanes, the rooms have binoculars so you can watch the aircraft come and go.

8:45am wheels up? You are going to want to be at the airport around 6am..... rush hour doesn't get heavy until after 7am.

Downtown to airport by cab is about 30 minutes.

In reality, time and commute wise.... there is little difference staying downtown vs airport with a cab.

I feel you can stay at anywhere your budget can afford. I would think instead about a hotel with restaurants or what's important to you.

I like the Vancouver Raddison airport for price and having a subway station across the street.

Yes, 8:45 am wheels up. Sucks, right? But it was the only non-stop to the East Coast. I went with the Fairmont at the airport, I figure we can go right from the cruise terminal, drop off bags and take the train back to downtown to explore. Then in the morning its an easy checkout and an elevator ride to the terminal at the crack of dawn.

The Fairmont Airport is a premium priced for the convenience.

Instead of dropping bags at the Fairmont.... have CDS ship the bags for you for $40 from the cruise terminal to the hotel. This gives you an extra hour to enjoy the city. Just take the subway to the hotel at the end of the day.
