Celebrity MoveUp

I just received an e-mail from Celebrity regarding my upcoming 7 night Bermuda cruise titled Celebrity MoveUp. It says I can bid on an upgrade. So I clicked on the upgrade link and check veranda, since we are booked in an ocean view. The LOWEST it will let me "bid" is $400 per person. What?

You want me to pay another $800 to move up from an outside to a veranda? That's crazy.

Has anyone used this before?

I have never heard of that - interesting. But I agree, that is a ridiculous amount for an opening bid for that type of upgrade. Curious how much more the room is showing on the website?

That's the problem, it's not more. You can book a guarantee veranda for $799 per person - no perks. If you want one perk add $150 per person. So that would be $1,049. We paid $949 for our ocean view but we got 2 perks (and TA threw in a tips).

Even more crazy than I thought!

Not for $400 more per person, they won't.

Also the e-mail said we were part of a select group to receive it. Not sure I believe that.

Actually I think the last part may be true. Have seen on Roll Calls where some got messages like these but others did not, so they may send it to only a select group. Not sure who that is, although I do think they only send it to people booked through Celebrity directly.

Well we just got the same email from Celebrity. We are in a concierge mid ship cabin and they are offering for us to "bid" on an upgrade. The offers are for all the different suites ranging from 500 to 1000 pp and 3000pp for the week but you don't choose a specific suite, you get what they give you. They said aqua class "from" 50pp so I clicked to see what it said and the minimum bid I could do was 500 so I did not go any further.

Mine also said only a few were offered this chance to upgrade. We got what we could afford and some perks so we will be happy with that.

This was also a Bermuda cruise.

Interesting that they are trying something different we will see if there are any last minute takers, it will not be us.

The borrowing of ideas from other lines...like Princess MUTS, , diff fares for refundable and non refundable a la Royal, and this bid up idea from NCL are further blurring the lines,.,not much diifferent or unique about X anymore .....Hope Edge stands out in some ways......

Filling the ships to the absolute max may add to revenue but will surely make the ships more crowded..some of them are already feel too full at certain times of the year... the loungers actually touch at the pool...

So X are following NCL and are now offering you to bid to upgrade for unsold cabins? What happened to the Captain’s Club incentive of being offered up-sells or did I imagine that being stated by X a few years ago?

We received same email a few hours ago and I got in here to check this out.

We are in same sailing as OP and also booked through TA--probably not same one as we've never met.

We also are in OV but usually book verandas for about $100 more per person. This $400 pp upgrade a couple weeks prior is insane. I think it was $500 pp for concierge and $600 pp aquaclass. Insane!!!!

The email said if you booked through TA to contact them but when I clicked to see upgrades it let me.

I did not go through with it. I'm spoiled with cheaper (reasonable) upsells on HAL.

We received the email for our Equinox cruise next week. We booked through a TA and the email would not let us click on the link to see the bid amounts. We got a great price for our 2A cabin on the hump and although an upgrade to concierge class might be a terrific deal, I have to think that at this late date, there's not going to be too many decent cabins left. It's kind of like booking a guarantee cabin but not being able to change the cabin if you don't like it. Also, cannot see what cabins are available on the website. TA couldn't see available cabins either.

I remember that too....or are we sharing a joint dream?

Seems very reasonable to me that loyalty could/should have some advantages for upgrades...

by bidding $400 per person for the chance of an upgrade you mark yourself to celebrity as someone who will more than likely pay $400 per person extra next time round as well, and they will know who bid $500, $600 and so on, i am sure they will use that information in the future. So when they've got cabins going spare they have the intel that person C will probably given them more than person B. So why go to person B for $500pp before you've asked person C for $600pp

But are their computer systems savvy enough to store and analyze that much sophisticated data??!! ;p:D:p

Personally, I find this quite odd, but do not underestimate Celebrity to stoop to these levels. They do have a casino onboard, so gambling is part of the MO...now, we also know that their web site is a mess and they do have some issues with doing what they say...I say, buyer beware of what you might get! by the way, I do not care what other cruise lines do, you need to dare to be a leader and not a follower!

Ahhhh, now I feel better without all the games. I want a nice cruise, for a good price and some stress free days/nights! Celebrity, in my book you can do so much better, but only if you step up to a higher level of integrity! This is my own opinion and written solely to share my own personal thoughts! Your opinion may be similar or different!

>>>>>>Not paying $1,000's above for a RS. I have the suite that I wanted and the price was excellent!

I make a dummy booking for the Summit sailing of May 19 the difference from OV Continental Deck 2 to Veranda Vista deck 7 is $600.00.

For our Silhouette Caribbean Cruise in march /19 the difference is $500 and almost 11 months to go the prices are going up

Interesting. Wonder how they picked their select group of customers?

They most likely just gave it to their IT department without any parameters...I shudder to think how this could turn out for some cruisers, but there are always some out there who will bite! I do not think they have a select group of customers and me thinks this is just a ploy to be like others...

Probably not....

But it reminds me of British Airways in the 80s when they asked their Business Travellers on Concorde how much they thought their company was paying to fly them on Concorde, What BA found was that Business Travellers thought they were paying MUCH more for their Concorde Flights than what BA was actually. What happened! BA massively hiked their prices for Concorde.

If Celebrity finds that an Auction means they can sell upgrades for $500 pp because on auction had plenty of bidders they know that they can probably ask at least that in the future.
