Thank you, sparks1093

Really appreciate the info! To be honest, we’re on a roll call for 2/9/19 and a fellow cruiser ask this question 4 days ago and hasn’t gotten a response, just wanted to help, I’m not sure if the member is aware of the Forums where you can ask all kinds of inquiries!

Have a great summer!!

A good start is to google the port...see what pops up! A guidebook is very helpful, as well! No sense paying for excursions if they don't interest you!

Why in the world would someone book an excursion that they have no interest in??? Well, at least you didn't tell her to go to the library, like you tell everyone.

Llonergan3.....One of the best websites to go to is TRIP ADVISOR. It is the sister site of Cruise Critic and many of us cruisers use this to read about and see all of the different excursions. The prices are listed and reviews. Check it out....I rely on it for great ideas!!! Good luck to you and I hope you have a wonderful cruise.

hate to tell ya

but as a cruise visit

Freeport sucks ....

You're not seeing much feedback because folks don't want to say "it sucks"

The place where the ship parks is very industrial with just a few shops near by ..... you need transportation to go to 'town' where there are a few casino/hotels ......

+++++++++++++++++

been there many times

most 'professionally' when I visited with CG Cutters

and a few times via cruise ships ....

b4 I was CO, I warned the CO that Freeport sucked as a port call, but they wanted to go ..... every time they came back and said they should have listened to me .....

The ONLY things at the port itself are shops built because the port was built. There is no beach at all. You have to take a cab into town-$5@. The free beaches are on the right with hotels. On the left are better shops and this is where you can get a tour (not necessarily a ship's tour) to snorkel and I think dive. Google tours in Freeport and see what comes up.

....but she did still suggest her ever popular guidebook! But major strides made by suggesting to google the port - which is good advice!

Yes, from a sailor's perspective Freeport would suck since to do anything costs money, including getting to anyplace where you can do anything. Of course since they added Senor Frogs to the pier area it might now be a sailor's dream liberty port- walk to the bar, knee crawl back to the ship.:)

I'm glad we didn't listen to all the nay-sayers about Freeport and instead took Carnival's kayak excursion (we enjoy kayaking and wanted to do something ship sponsored with limited port time).

We had an enjoyable drive to the excursion with an entertaining guide. I appreciated seeing an island that had more to it than just tourism, even if it wasn't all pretty - although the concrete balls and jacks were neat to see.

The kayaking was fun if at times frustrating (narrow areas in the mangroves), the brief nature walk was nice, and Gold Rock Beach - stunning!! It's very undeveloped (pristine) so if you are looking for bars, chairs, or beach toys it wouldn't be for you. If you enjoy simplicity, nature, powder soft sand and clear ocean then it's a great way to spend the day. You won't get much time in port when you get back (about 30 minutes) but we weren't interested in shopping that trip.

Our next cruise we will just check out the shops at the port and enjoy a lazy day on the ship, but if we have another opportunity to go to Freeport I think we would enjoy more of Grand Lucayan Park or trying some of the snorkeling spots.

If you want to find something to complain about there's plenty of opportunity at Freeport, but there is also a lot to offer depending on your interests too.

I too would discount those saying there is nothing to do, or that the port sucks.

I suppose if you expect to fall of the ship and land on a beautiful beach or have a ton of organized activities right there waiting for you or you choose to do absolutely no research/planning, then yes, you would be disappointed. But the ride into town is short and not expensive at all. There are a few resorts where you can buy day passes. Gold Rocks Beach is simply gorgeous! In fact we have found the beaches on Grand Bahama Island to be superior to those on Nassau and even some places in the Caribbean.

Our last time at Freeport we booked a private tour that took us all around the island. We got to see the impact of the recent hurricane and were told about just how bad it was for some. We got to spend some time at Gold Rocks Beach (again, stunning!), were taken to lunch at a charming little seafood place. Not at all touristy and the fish was fresh and perfectly prepared. We also had a guided walking tour of Lucayan National Park. We saw a lot of wildlife, got to go inside a couple of caves, crossed several large wooden bridges over the marsh and so forth. We booked through shoreexcursioneer and I want to say we paid around $50.00 per person for the whole thing, lunch included.

Yeah, nothing to do in Freeport.

Always happy to help! When we were brand new at this cruising thing about 14 years ago, Cruise Critic was a life saver. Just happy to now be able to return the favor.

I won't be on your cruise but I am sure you will have a wonderful time and make some terrific memories. Bon voyage!!

We loved Paradise Cove! Nice beach with some of the most rewarding snorkeling we've done from the beach. (Okay, Hanauma Bay in Hawaii was better, but wrong part of the world.:)) Their shuttle picked us up right at the ship and brought us back in plenty of time. Food is extra, but not terribly expensive. If we go back to Freeport we'll visit again.

Thank you so much for the feedback. I wanted my daughter and her hubby to get the most of the port and they love the ocean, me and Mike not so much plus I travel with my 89 year young mom so we love the shops and try the local cuisine!

Have a great summer and Happy cruising!

Linda
