Biking Railway Trail

We are quite adventurous, and enjoy exploring on our own.

We are thinking of renting mountain bikes at the dock and biking to St. George's, then taking the ferry back to the dock. Has anyone tried this? Is this too ambitious?

Can you bike the entire way on the rail trail?

You can't bike the entire way. The trail itself starts in Somerset, about three miles from the Royal Naval Dockyard. There are sections with gaps in the trail, sections where you'll have to walk your bike, places with obstacles.

If you are up to a combination of biking and walking your bike over sometimes rough terrain for 20 miles you could do it. If you google "Bermuda railway trail" you'll find links to a variety of websites with information about it. if you check out this page, https://www.bermuda-attractions.com/bermuda2_000036.htm , scroll down to near the bottom of the page to the part written by Brian Roy Rosen in March 2017 . He has a good description of what you'll encounter on the trail.

Here's a map of what is available today:

from the FAQs for the trail, here are the definition of terms:

The part marked "easiest" is is broad and flat, and almost all of it is paved. The parts marked "easy" are flat with only the occasional old bridge or trestle site where you must stop and walk your bike down and up short, fairly steep slopes. The parts marked "hard" have a lot of old bridge sites and are not practical for bikes.

You are probably best with a mountain bike, except on the western section (marked "Easiest"), where any bike will do.....

The original railroad was 22 miles long. Today, there are 18 miles of trail.

Thanks for the feedback. We would be planning to make a day of the biking, with making many stops to explore.

There are four of us traveling together, so it will probably depend on how adventurous they want to be.

I am always up for something new and challenging.

Below is a link to a website that may help you with the Railway trail. They break out the trail in sections.

https://www.instantstreetview.com/ This site is great also. Just put in Bermuda in the address and you click on the road or trail.

I plan on running/walking about 4 miles of the trail on the north shore next week.
