Pricy at $50 but iNav gives you a complete set of nautical charts for the entire US including Alaska. It allows you to mark the chart with waypoints, etc, and will track the progress of the ship when you have it on. This app is one used by the pilot on the bridge to navigate the ship.

You can purchase a fairly low cost GPS receiver for those ipads without built in GPS...some plug right in to the lightning connector, and use the ipad for power, others have their own batteries and connect wirelessly....

Navionics have a free 2 week trial which I used recently on a cruise in Alaska on my I pad. I found it worked well as long as you use it near the balcony. You have to download the maps to cover the area you need in advance. I found it took about 6 download squares to cover the inside passage route. It gives speed and loads of information about where you are and the sea underneath. After 2 weeks it just expires you do not have to cancel a subscription.
