Fort Knox and Penobscot Narrows Observatory

Has anyone done this excursion? We are looking for different things to do and this looked interesting.

I vaguely remember doing the observatory on a trip to Maine. I don't think I would make a special trip to see it or go significantly out of my way. What are your other options?

This is an hour bus ride from Bar Harbor, each way. Not sure I'd be interested in sitting on a bus that long just to climb an observation tower. The fort is nice, and extremely well maintained, but again, I don't think I'd spend a port day in a bus.

Actually the bus ride sounds nice. I have never been to Maine so I would enjoy looking at the scenery and the area. We get back with plenty of time to explore the area.
