Reef Shoes

I have read a lot about reef shoes and/or water shoes being necessary for this cruise. I have water shoes that have a closed toe and I have a pair of water shoes that are more like a sandal and they have a strap around my ankle and across my toes.

Can I get by with the sandal type shoe or do I really need the closed toe shoe?

IMHO, if you are going to be around coral, I would wear the closed toe shoe. One cannot control those around them or the current. Better to be safe than sorry.
