we will end our cruise in Auckland. Our flight home departs the next AM at 0600 so we will be staying overnight at the Novatel at the airport.so here are my questions:

Is there anyplace at the port that we could check our luggage so we can spend the day in town before heading to the airport?

What would be the best way to get from port area to airport? Public transportation would be fine if not too complicated.

Any suggestions for activities/tours for the day in Auckland?

I cannot help regarding luggage unfortunately.

Best option to get to the airport from the city is:

Plenty to do in Auckland. There is a hop on hop off bus which leaves close to the pier and provides quite a variety of options. Otherwise head over to Devonport by ferry or Waiheke Island by ferry.

Recommend a search on the page for other activites.

Waiheke Island is a lovely place to spend a day or part of a day and a great way to end a cruise! It's only a half-hour ferry ride from the harbor. My husband and I did a wonderful wine tour there a few months ago with Phil Parker. Here's his link and a link to my blog post about our day there, which you might find helpful. Phil might also be a good source for information regarding luggage storage.

We are headed to Waiheke on our extra day in Auckland. Can you tell me if you can walk from the where the ferry lands into the little town area. We'd just like to spend the day walking around, have coffee and lunch, rather than doing anything formal. Does this seem possible there?

The ferry landing area didn't strike me as walkable, but I'm sure there is bus or taxi service into town. We drove through the town on our way to one of the wineries, and it looked like there were lots of shops and restaurants to explore. I found this website, which might be helpful – especially the "getting around" section.

Good luck!

For those of you who might know, what will we see on New Year's Eve from our ship in Auckland? Will there be fireworks?

There will be fireworks from the Skytower at midnight, which should be easy to see from the ship.

A fireworks display that usually launches from the sky tower. Don’t expect anything as big as the US though. Bands at most of the public places that will be playing. Check out this site

Thanks...will take a look at that site! I have heard things will be very crowded. One day we will be going to Waiheke Island and we've already been warned that it's a very popular holiday place to be, so guessing we will need to be aware of that in regards to the ferry. In fact, it sounds like the wharf area will also be very busy with those on holiday. We aren't into night life and partying, but some bands would be lovely.
