Considering Disney

My wife and I have cruised Princess and Holland America previously. We are considering a cruise on the Disney Wonder out of Galveston in October (the timing fits with visiting some family when we get back). Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts as to whether or not this would be a trip we would enjoy. At of right now, no kids. I can't imagine that week being "kid heavy" due to school, but who knows.

Thanks.

I'm not sure there is any week when you are not going to have a lot of kids on a Disney cruise. If you enjoy all things Disney then you will like the cruise. The cast members (crew) are amazing and there are adult only areas. No casino but you can bring on all the alcohol you can carry.

Thanks for the insight. For our honeymoon, we actually did a few days at Disney World, then went on our first Princess cruise the following week. This year, we had actually been considering a trip to Disney as our vacation. What made me decide to look at a Disney cruise was the fact that we are looking at a family event in October, and I decided to look at a cruise, and the only one that would work for the time frame is a 7 day to the Caribbean on the Wonder. I'll have a chat with my TA to see if it looks like a good fit.

With regards to the alcohol, unfortunately, we would probably be flying in day of (I know, but at this point it doesn't look feasible to fly in the day before), so I would take the Disney transfers from the airport. Plus, I'm not a huge drinker, so for the possible one drink a day, I'll deal with it.

The good news is the included soda. Means I don't need to get my wife a soda sticker :) On that note, do they have any Caffeine Free Diet options?

We did a Caribbean cruise on Disney in February, 2012 and a Disney cruise in Europe last month. Both times I was amazed how few kids there were. There are a lot of adults that are Disney fans. Even when we did the tour on our first cruise, the guide told us there weren't many kids on board since it wasn't a school break. They told us about 23% of Disney cruisers are Disney time share owners using their points for the cruise.

I also noticed walking around the top deck at night there were only a few people out, so it never seemed crowded. And Disney food and service are top notch, as were their broadway style shows. Give it a shot. I'm sure you will really enjoy it.

Our very first cruise was on the Wonder. It got us hooked on cruising. :) It was actually only our last cruise (Disney Fantasy) this past March that we got to the adult areas on any of the ships we have been on (yes we have kids). They we awesome. If you can grab a Palo reservation. Best brunch ever.

Drinks. Went to pictures of the last cruise. They had the following at the drink station:

Coke

Diet Coke

Sprite

Hi-C

Water

Nestea

Sprite Zero

Water

also a coffee (reg and decaf) and a large tea selection.

I've been on The Wonder twice and love it.

Caffiene free diet is Sprite Zero on the ship.

We've been on 3 Disney cruises without taking any children.

Love the 2 bathroom areas in the rooms. Only thing I miss is a casino...but, my billfold is fine with it :D

Thanks for the info.

I should have expected that Sprite Zero would be it. Unfortunately, in the evening I can't drink anything with caffeine, and I choose not to drink sugared soda, so it pretty much limits me to water. Not that I have an issue with it, but if there was a caffeine free Diet Coke available, that would be great.

Even if your week was a "kid-heavy" week, it would not infringe on your ability to enjoy your cruise and relax. Dh and I have cruised with our kids and without on the Wonder and the Magic. Our kid-free cruise was fantastic, maybe even better than our family cruises (don't tell the kids). This is coming from someone who is not a "Disney" person. (My mom lives about an hour from DW and we never go.). There are bunch of reason we prefer DCL over any other cruiseline for our couples cruises. If you asked my husband, he would tell you it was the onboard activities and the fantastic staff that made them even better than what he expected. If we could afford it, every cruise would be with DCL!

For us, dh and myself, DCL has a lot more going for it than say Carnival or the other cruiselines that you would think would be a better choice for an adult couple. The happiest I have seen my husband on vacation has been on a Disney cruise.

I have taken three Disney cruises without kids, and I love it (but to be fair, I should admit that I'm a big Disney fan who goes to Disney World at least twice a year).

Disney has awesome shows (well, except for that awful Toy Story musical). I just went on my first non-Disney cruise on Carnival, and the entertainment on Carnival was no where near the level it is on Disney).

The food and service on Disney are excellent. I can't really recall ever having an issue with too many kids on the ship--they are in the kids areas. The adult areas on the ship are great as well.

I was looking forward to that in two weeks time!!! :)

Would Disney be a fun girls trip? "Girls" as in like 50 +/-. We all love Disney, like to dance, have fun and don't need a lot of encouragement to do so! Seems like it would be a blast!

Galveston rates are cheaper than normal and they are pulling out of galv. I say jump on it, especially if your trip includes hopping at WDW as a port. It is the older ship but people still love it. After our first dipping our toes into DC this yr with a 3 Day, our family is totally hooked!!! What an incredible experience. We got off the Carnival Dream in Mar and I thought I was done cruising for years. We ended up on the Disney Dream in April and now I realize that Carnival now is like a floating hotel compared to Disney. We have zero kids in our group. The entertainment and technology and different dining options, the CMs and most especially Castaway Cay, wow! If you can get a good Bye Texas rate, you should! They are basically all moving to Port Canaveral (which I do love but a 13 hr drive) and Miamia (blah) so if its convenient, I'd jump on it. As far as too many kids go, please, our CCL in Feb had masses of kids too. Just trying waiting in line for an ice cream or hotdog.

Yay Disney cruising! Anyone who has ever enjoyed the park experience and likes to cruise should have a completely awesome vacation. Its like all the characters and fun and magic and entertainment of the parks but much more relaxed and they bring it to you along with a great dining experience each night. We are ready to book our next one!

The itinerary in question is a Western Carib itinerary, so no Castaway Cay or Port Canaveral. In all honesty, we would probably have stayed on the ship for Castaway Cay (while I enjoy cruising in warm climates, I have an extreme hatred of beaches, so the idea of a beach day equates to a quiet day on the ship).

Yes it would be, try to avoid school kid holidays you might get some good rates.

Enjoy.

One shouldn't expect it to be. Disney is an entertainment company with a cruise line. Carnival (and every other line) is a cruise company with entertainment.

CCL is a floating hotel that takes you to amazing places while you play trivia games or snooze on the way there.... DCL is a floating resort that takes u to some great places but makes it hard to get off the ship since cruising with them is so interesting and entertaining! I used to wonder why people wouldn't get off a ship on a cruise... Now Im tempted too! On my CCL last time, I was happy to debark. On my DCL and ever since, all I want to do is book another...think that's gonna happen this week...

I really like the way you summed up the difference between Disney and the other cruiselines in one line. Well-said.

I know I quoted before but further call, if Disney is an entertainment company with a cruise line. Carnival (and every other line) is a cruise company with entertainment, I was trying to place RCI.

I would say their a cruise company with an eye on your wallet, and little entertainment.
