Things to do/ see in Perth?

We are starting a cruise in Perth next January and plan a few days in Perth to get over jetlag. We’ve visited Australia several times, but never been to the Perth areas. Should we stay in Perth or just find a hotel near a beach to relax?

Thanks,

The answer is really one of your personal preferences. We just did a cruise in March from Perth and stayed in a hotel for a few nights pre-cruise in the central business district. We did not want to miss Perth but we could have stayed outside the city and visited as well. It is a good sized city with shopping, dining, bars, etc. Your cruise will leave from Fremantle which is smaller on the seaport so you can stay there as well and there are good hotel and dining options there too. Perth has a very nice botanical garden and a zoo. It took us a couple of days to adjust our time from US east coast so we probably could have done a relaxing beach too. It just depends on you!

Hi Avery, my wife and I live in Perth. Perth has some of the best beaches in Australia so if you like the beach, it’s not a bad option. The only problem is that January is the middle of summer so it will probably be quite hot (100 plus), and the beach gets very windy in the afternoons. There’s really only one half decent hotel on the beach in Perth (Rendezvous Scarborough). Scarborough is a nice beach, as is Cottesloe.

Otherwise you can stay in the CBD. There a few good choices there Accommodation wise. Dependent on your budget, I would recommend (dearest to cheapest) Como at The Treasury, The Westin, or The Intercontinental. Crown Towers is nice too, it’s a part of the Crown Casino complex just a couple of Km away from the CBD.

Must sees in Perth are King’s Park, Cottesloe Beach, and Rottnest Island. I hope this helps.

Some of the things we enjoyed seeing in Perth/Fremantle included : Western Australia Maritime Museum, WA Shipwreck Museum, Fremantle Gaol, Aquarium of WA, and the Perth Mint. We also did a day trip (ferry + bicycle rental) to Rottnest Island. (The quokkas are so cute--just don't feed them!)

As a fellow Perth resident, I concur with Moonunit (Frank Zappa fan?) above. There is limited quality accommodation on any beach. Probably for just a few days stay, a CBD location might be best.

If you like wine, the Swan Valley region is only an hour's drive from the CBD and is criminally undervalued by locals. There are some great wines out there and some fantastic lunch spots. You could either hire a car or there are a number of day trip operators available.

Either way, bring a hat and sunscreen. The middle of January can get very hot.

We are flying into Perth and have a spare day before boarding the Indian Pacific. I appreciate the info provided here. I’m assuming the hotels listed above would be our best choices as well? Are any of them within walking distance of the train station? Would there be any advantage to staying near the airport?

We have a good suburban train service in Perth as well as free buses in the central business area until early evening.

Do not stay out near the airport as only motels in the area and nothing else of interest. The airport is only a short taxi (oruber) ride to the City centre.and the Indian Pacific leaves from East Perth train station, a very short train ride from the Central Business District as well.

If you were coming in a couple of years time you would have been able to access a train from the Airport to the City (in the progress of being tunnelled as we speak.

You will love Perth even just for a day and enough things to see by using the free buses to go to Kings Park, the Perth Mint etc.
