Ok... I live locally... LAX is in the middle of major work. The 405 freeway is the most congested hiway in America...all 16 lanes of it and at 7 to10 it is a parking lot of grid lock. And they are working on that too!!!

Southwest is the first terminal 1 but your cab will have to pass through 2 major interchanges on the freeway and a LAPD security check point before even getting there... from San Pedro.

I would allow 30 min to get off (0830) the ship 1 hours (0930 to get to the terminal, 1.2 hour to check in and get through security (10:45)and 15 min to get to the gate..... so figure 1100 at the earliest....with everything going your way.......

I would not schedule anything before 12:30.....unless your a masochist

Be prepared to feel like you are being held hostage by the staff who really don't care whether you make your flight or not. Even if you do get off and want to take their shuttle, be prepared to have it stop at every single terminal and to be waiting at the pier until the bus is full.

They required our flight information and yet refused to let us leave when we were supposed to get off. Even when we were "finally" escorted into the theater with constant "red one" only, just about everyone in the line had tags that were clearly not walk off.

Are you talking about the onboard Princess staff? They do communicate ahead of time that any flights before a specified time is not recommended (this is for any itinerary based on distance from local airports and traffic patterns).

As an Angeleno native who commuted for many years on the "West Side," (where LAX is), I think Princess (and the other cruise lines, who I would guess have the same recommendations for LA) know a morning flight is risky after disembarkation.

As for the Princess shuttle, maybe they could try to arrange for all those leaving on the same airline to be on the same shuttle and off the ship at the same time so there's no wait...but again, if look at all the people who post on the same topic (if you did a search on CC, you will find many threads on same day flights for embarkation and disembarkation days) who claim they never miss a flight. I'm not going to encourage anyone stress themselves out by booking a risky flight.

ok you have all convinced me to change my flight. It will cost a little more and we'll be sitting in the airport for 4 hours but I guess we won't have to worry about missing our flight.

You will need to walk off with your luggage. Then either taxi or shared van like super shuttle. Your are cutting it very close. Hopefully you have TSA preferred status to get through security quickly at LAX. Good luck

They posted yesterday that they changed to a later flight.

Likely a choice that you will be happy with.

You may not be spending as much time sitting at the airport as you think as you now have some options to exercise like...

Enjoying breakfast.

More leisurely exit the ship.

Wander around the decks one last time.

And probably some others.

That's what I decided---thanks for all your help in coming to this decision

A bit late, but I believe SWA flies out or Orange Co. John Wayne Airport and Ontario. Much less traffic and an easy airport to navigate. You might consider checking it out. SWA advertises no charge for flight changes, so might be a good option.

Do the self walk off with your luggage in the earliest group.

We do this everytime and grab a cab, (there are plenty).

Around $60. We usually catch a 9:35 flight, have been doing it for years.

As stated have a backup plan. ;)

Keith, we have a 10:30AM flight out of LAX, arriving back into San Pedro on Holland America. I saw your text and was happy to see that you make a 9:35 flight. Could you confirm that, and give me any advise you might have. We plan to walk off with our luggage. Are the taxi's convenient when we get out of terminal? How long is the taxi ride? Thanks so much.

I would also like to know this but in addition, does Customs hold debarkation up as San Pedro will be the first port of call into the US after a Panama Canal Cruise. If Princess has the 'walk off group with own bag', I will be doing that. I was thinking of an 11 am flight but perhaps, I better do 12.30.

Thanks

Rosie

Good call.

Never know what will happen on our freeways. Only constant that I have figured out is that if I’m not running late or in a hurry the freeways will be clear. If I’m in a rush and running late, I’ll hit a Sig Alert.

LAX is still under construction. Never know how long it’ll take you to go around the horseshoe. Sometimes even the shortcuts don’t save any time.
