There's one rental place within a reasonable walk of the port, Cayman Auto Rentals. Everything else is near the airport, but some of the companies will offer shuttles for renters from the port. All the usual US chains are there, plus one local company Andy's. All have websites if you google them, so just pick your favs and check the rates for your date.

I would suggest Budget (since it’s the one we used) for one reason. They have a “cruise ship” rate that includes everything. Rental, insurance, license fee, and gas. It appealed to the side of me that wanted to know my final price up front. I did pay the extra for the gps.

Are the last 2 posts for golf carts or cars? I'm only interested in golf carts

The topic seems to have switched to cars, since as previously mentioned you're not going to see a golf cart unless you're golfing. The closest you'll get to the experience you're looking for is to rent a jeep and put the top down, or go on the Segway tour.

Does anyone know if you can rent a golf cart right by the port to run around the island?

No, to golf carts. We took a land trip there. If you can rent a car for the day and want to do your own thing, I would recommend that. Its an easy island to drive around on. You drive on the left side of the road but it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. Drivers are very accommodating to us newbies.
