Currency in Cozumel

Hi I read on my cruise site that Cozumel no longer takes US$ For purchase . You must pay in pesos Is this true? If so would it make more sense to bring Canadian $ to convert since I am from Canada instead of buying US $ and covert to pesos.

Please advise.

Just spent ten days on the island and everywhere took cash. You may get change in pesos however. There are places that can't take credit cards. Good ol US dollars though are no problem

Been to Cozumel countless times and the US dollar is accepted at just about any place a tourist is likely to go - including cabs. What cruise site are you looking at? :confused:

I have been going to Cozumel for 18 years for vacations and always used US dollars. Yes, they have a conversion rate to pesos, and every store usually has it posted at the register, so you know. Using a credit card is not something you should do, however, as it will add on a conversion fee percentage, as well as your bank may charge you extra. Use dollars for everything on the island,, and take bills 20s or smaller.

We always ask what exchange rate is being used and frequently pay in pesos cash or using a credit card with no foreign transaction fee, for a better rate but probably not worth the effort for a day trip to get pesos cash and $ can certainly be used.
