Is 1.5 hours enough of a layover to make a Delta - Virgin Atlantic connection at JFK?

So we finally bit the bullet and got our airline tickets to Europe for next summer. We're flying Phoenix-JFK on a Delta flight, then JFK-London on a Virgin Atlantic flight. (Bought the trip through Virgin Atlantic.)

A family member is horrified that we have "only" a 1 hour, 40 minute layover at JFK; she is convinced that we will have to change terminals, etc., and could be in trouble if the flight into JFK is delayed for any reason.

When I look up the terminal map at JFK, however, it looks like the Delta/Virgin Atlantic flights are in the same terminal.

Looking for reassurance that we should be fine with our layover time, barring an unusually long delay on the Phx-JFK flight.

Thanks for any input or advice.

Delta Terminal 2 (Domestic only a few gates) Terminal 4 (International) (no T3) but that changes you can be in either terminal.

Virgin Atlantic is T4 (Not to be confused with Virgin America in T7).

The problem also is T4 is HUGE, Concourse A is small, then you have the connecting concourse where you enter, shops are at, then Concourse B has 50+ gates, moving sidewalks plus shops and eateries.

There is a airside bus (Jitney Shuttle) that connects both ends of concourse T4 Concourse B and T2 runs in a triangle, you don't need to reclear security.

I don't know about connecting to an international carrier, others will post.

To the best of my knowledge, VS operates from the same B concourse in T4 that DL does. Coming in from PHX would most likely come in to T4, though that can always change due to operational necessity. T2 tends to have shorter segment flights and smaller aircraft, but again, there are usual exceptions to every "rule".

One bad thing about the moving walkways in T4. Due to arrangements with retail vendors, you will NOT have a moving walkway in front of any retail location. Only when passing in front of gate areas. So there are some significant gaps in coverage.

Assuming normal operations, you should be OK as long as you don't dawdle. Get to your gate area, then investigate retail/food. You will get meals onboard VS, and there is duty-free on arrival at LHR - just FYI.

Hopefully your return connection is longer, as immigration lines at JFK can be murder.

We have landed in JFK twice on a domestic flight to go overseas, the domestic terminal is connected by a shuttle bus to the international terminal.

It is not very far, last year our flight from Orlando was delayed, so we ended up with only 1 hour between flights, we moved fast and made the flight.

There is no "domestic terminal" or "international terminal". Please be accurate in your postings.

DL operates from both T2 and T4. International arrivals come in to T4, and most international departures do the same. It is possible for there to be a situation where they need to send out an international flight from T2. Also, domestic arrivals and departures happen at both T2 and T4, so there is no "domestic" terminal designation.

Now, at some airports, there are separate distinct buildings for international and domestic operations. But DL at JFK is not one of them.

Thank you to all who have replied!

Gates can change, of course, but as of this week, the Delta flight from Phoenix to JFK arrives in Terminal 4, Gate B34. The Virgin Atlantic flight to London leaves from Terminal 4, Gate A5.

It sounds like we should be ok, unless our Phx-JFK flight is unusually delayed. We will of course move as quickly as possible to our departure gate before relaxing.

Flyer Talker, you asked about our return flight. We have a 2 hour, 40 minute layover on the way back from London. Again, hopefully this time will be adequate. We did just get Global Entry.

  • 2 weeks later...

We had a two hour layover from JFK returning from Israel and didn't make our flight. It took an hour to get our luggage and go through customs. We had to wait an additional 8 hours for the next flight home to Orlando. The planes carry so many people and they all have a lot of baggage. Good luck!

Yikes! I am sorry that happened.
