Walk to Shop?

We'll be stopping in Barbados during our 2 wk. southern Caribbean cruise in December. We'd like to walk around Bridgetown hopefully seeing some of it's history w/out having to get transportation. We'd like to see some shops also.

Is this something we'll come upon or do we need to include an excursion, transportation, etc.?

We've never been to this island and would appreciate any thoughts or ideas to those of you who have done this same type thing?

It is about a 30 minute walk into the shopping area. I suggest a cab.
