Checking in at Venice cruise terminal - how to do it

We have sailed into Venice on a couple of cruises, but have never transferred from the city to the cruise port independently. If we take the People Mover to Marittima, where does this bring us out in relation to Security and the appropriate terminal for check-in? Thanks as always for your help.

It depends on which berth your ship is at. We had to walk with our bags more than a 1/2 mile down to berth 20 before we could turn them over to a porter. See the map at http://cruiseportwiki.com/Venice Since we arrived in the afternoon, we didn't have any wait to board.

Then about 2:00 a.m. the ship moved to Riva Sette Martiri, which is about 3/4 mile east of San Marco Plaza!

Coins for People Mover

I remember check in was very smooth and we enjoyed sailing from here very much.

If you are staying at a hotel the night before, and you are on a canal, you can arrange for a water taxi. Not cheap, but a spectacular way to start your cruise.

It was so easy to let the taxi driver and the porters handle everything. The taxi let us right off where the porters were at the terminal. And he handed our luggage to the porters. There was a HAL rep there, just in case we did not have our luggage tags with our cabin numbers.

We still look back and say that was the best transfer decision we made!

We stayed in Venice for 5 nights prior to our Westerdam Med/TA 25 day cruise last October. The 4 of us hired a private water taxi from our hotel concierge and it was 80 Euros for the whole boat. It was a short ride to the water taxi drop-off dock, and there was help to pull our luggage our of the boat and onto the pier. But then we had at least 1/2 mile walk to the terminal where the Westerdam was docked. Not a long walk if you are just carrying a carry-on type bag. But we had almost 30 days of clothes in 3 bags that we had to roll the distance. We didn't realize that there are taxis available where the water taxi drops us, and they could have taken us to the ship terminal. We found this out when we were almost halfway there. Too far to turn back.

Much does depend on which terminal they are using for check-in, but the reality is that the least amount of walking will be by taking a regular land taxi from the Piazale Roma to the port. Its a very short ride, but the taxis usually want at least 20€. When you arrive via the People Mover it is hit of miss whether there will be any form of help or if you will have to walk all the way to the appropriate terminal...dragging your own luggage. Sometimes there is an internal port shuttle bus and other times there is nothing. After all, this is Italy :). As to water taxis, it can be a hike from where they drop to your terminal and again, there may or many not be any help. The only thing certain about that port is uncertainty.

People mover did take credit cards last October. Can be a longish walk with luggage unless u luck out on the terminal.

US issued credit cards do not always work in European credit vending machines. Keep in mind that the People Mover is only 1.5€ and folks should always be carrying Euro cash when traveling in much of Europe including Italy.

Thats too right. Even though US cards now carry Chips, the US went with Chip and Signature, Not Chip and Pin as implement in Europe. If you don't have a PIN to go with your Chip CC, your going to be out of luck with most European Kiosks. This is especially a pain in Train/Subway Stations, as we almost always end up having to go to the teller to get our tickets.

Thanks to everyone for all their good advice. We've used the People Mover (without luggage though) and if you haven't got euro coins, there is a shop nearby where you can buy your tickets which was very useful. We paid with notes, so don't know whether you could use your US credit cards. As Brits, we use chip and pin CC's all the time and find in some Med hotels/restaurants that they swipe the card but don't ask for the pin.
