Post cruise two night stay on Marathon or Key West?

We will stay two nights after a cruise in Florida so we are considering to rent a car and drive from Fort Lauderdale to Key West area. Basically we would like to see the Florida Keys area and just to relax - night life or beach life is not our target.

Should we book a hotel from Key West or Marathon (where we could have a day trip to KW) or from somewhere else? We will have 9pm flight so what time should we leave from Marathon or KW to be on time on FLL?

If you have never been to Key West, then I suggest staying at a B&B in Old Town. Rent bicycles and explore all around the island at your leisure.

Having been to Key West so many times, we now prefer to stay either on Cudjoe Key, Big Pine Key, or in Marathon. You can still take a day trip to Key West from there. (If in Marathon, visit the Turtle Hospital!).

Leaving the Keys for a 9pm flight in FLL ... well, there is only one way in and one way out. If there is an accident on US1, the road could be backed up for hours. Are you flying home on a weekday or weekend? Holiday weekend? That could make all the difference. I would leave no later than 2:00 pm to allow yourself at least 4 hours to get from Key West to FLL. Or you may wish to consider spending your second night in the middle to upper Keys, such as Islamorada or Key Largo, to shorten the drive to FLL. The drive is spectacular either way.
