Patmos, Greece, May 2018

Just learned that the Oceania Nautica will be visiting Patmos instead of Kusadasi, Turkey, for Ephesus, in May 2018, instead due to the visa issue between the US and Turkey.

So, has anyone been there recently, and if so, what is there to see/do.

Thank you,

Bill and Kathi

Excellent above sharing. Here is more. From the Travel Section of the London/UK Sunday Times tomorrow morning, they will have this headline: slice of paradise on the island of Patmoswith these highlights: Once a simple fishing village, pristine Grikos, near the Patmos port of Skala, is often listed among the world’s most beautiful bays. On this serene sandy cove, bright fishing boats drop anchor round the primal hulk of the Rock of Kalikatsou, where religious hermits dwelt for centuries in lunar-like clefts in the volcanic surface. A former temple of Aphrodite, this huge rock resembles a sculpture rising from the sea, and was also a holy seat of worship for Christians during biblical times.

We will be visiting Athens Nov. 14-16 and then we will board for our 20-day Oceania cruise for doing our first visits to th Holy Lands, Egypt, Jordan and the Middle East/Dubai. Our first cruise stop will be on this somewhat lessen-known Greek island. From this profile, they also shared: "Patmos, the Holy Island of Revelations, where the exiled John the Apostle wove his strange and terrible visions into Christianity’s darkest, most gripping text, is a place you go to lose yourself. During late July and August, a clubby collective of A-listers, fashion royalty and the chic elite fly in by helicopter to stay in Greece’s most expensive villas in the citadel city of Hora. Presiding over it all, and the island’s 3,000 residents, is the epic 11th-century Monastery of St John the Theologian. In antiquity 'deserted and fallow' Patmos was a feared island of banishment. Paradoxically, it’s the lure of splendid isolation that is the biggest attraction today. In fact, this elegant seahorse-shaped island of just 16 square miles has become the Aegean’s most wanted escape for those who crave quiet beauty and sophisticated luxury, far away from the crush of mass tourism and all-night discos."

Sounds wonderful! We're excited!! Any others have details to share from visiting Patmos? Since we visited here in June 2006 and have done the key religious sites previously, we might get a four-wheel vehicle and do some exploring when there November 17. By then, the rich elites will have departed. Fun??!!

From this Sunday Times travel profile, here is one of their visuals reflecting that this island of Patmos in the Aegean has a "quiet beauty". Looks great and very inviting for a re-visit!!:
