Sports Bar? Not by any definition.

Could you be more specific about "that area"? Sounds like it could mean an area extending beyond the bar itself.

Others were commenting like "The difference is that people watching soap operas do not make all the noise that people watching some sports do and that noise carries to other parts of the ship", "If people want to watch sport then they should watch it in their cabin." with people agreeing. What I was saying was that, if they didn't like people enjoying watching sports in a public area, they should just not go to that bar area.

It isn't really a sports bar, it is a bar that happens to have a couple of TV's that might or might not have some sports being broadcast.

It should really be renamed the "Casino Bar that might or might not have some sports being broadcast".

Are there any Cruise lines that do a proper sports bar? None of the ones I've been on do. Perhaps just not a good fit for around the world satellite consistency.

A proper sports bar? Probably not. But some lines really attempt to accommodate sports fans. Princess will put some games (especially ones of great interest) on their big screen (MUTS) at the pool deck. On Sundays this deck is often crowded with those taking in the games be it NFL, Baseball, etc. We were on Celebrity during a World Series and they started out by having the games on a few smaller screens in a bar near the disco (where shouting patrons would not disturb folks. When they realized how popular the games were, they quickly moved the World Series game into one of the larger lounges where it was standing room only until after midnight (some of the games ran late).

Now I would compare this to HAL cruises where the ship is akin to a morgue by 10pm. We do like HAL, but often find that we are "closing the ship" if we are in a bar (or even the piano bar) after 11. I once had an interesting conversation with a favorite HAL Cruise Director about the lack of late night activities and support. He raised an interesting issue which is would HAL cruisers stay awake for anything? or, if he scheduled some things after 11 would folks actually show up. On other lines such as Princess and Celebrity it is not unusual to have late night (11:30 or midnight) adult comedy shows...which are often SRO. We wonder if such a show on HAL would draw more then a dozen souls. Go up on a Princess pool deck where they have the large screen MUTS, and you are liable to see several hundred passengers watching a late night (after 10) movie or sports event. On HAL where they do have a large screen (on the aft deck) the screen does not even work (or its never used).

HAL probably thinks that curling is an olympic sport. OMG.....it is. What has become of real sports? The next think you know, they will have shuffleboard on the sports bar TV.

Hank, I vote for women's volleyball. Bet that would draw a crowd. It doesn't matter what country or team either. ;p

....In order to have a real Sports Bar, with multiple sports playing, they would have to spend a bit of money for additional satellite coverage, which is a big challenge for them.

Yes, previously discussed. I think the "if you can't do it right, don't do it" folks are winning. Or in this case, losing.

I am all or ramping up the sports bar. If we make a bit of noise it might be because we are having fun. Don't deny people with different tastes from having a bit of fun on their holiday There are lots of places on the ship to hang out away from the noisy sports bar folk. And if we get a bit carried away I'm sure the bar tenders can get us back under control and maintain the decorum.

Either you have never been on a HAL cruise on Super Bowl Sunday or you have a poor memory, because every time we have been on a HAL cruise on SBS (4 or 5 times IIRC), there was a huge (very well-attended) SB party with lots of food and free-flowing liquor. Judging by the cheering that could be heard (virtually) throughout the deck where the party was held, it appeared that many (I'd estimate something upwards of 100 on each occasion) passengers had a very good time.

As with most things in life, some people enjoy such things and some don't. I do not, so I didn't attend the SB parties, but I would not attempt to impose my preferences on anyone who does. I do, however, have the right to express my preferences to HAL, and my preference is that HAL not have sports bars on its ships. JMP

Try Carnival. Many of their ships have nicely appointed self contained sports bars.

We were on the Splendor in 2015 and watched the final game of the Stanley Cup in the sports bar. The satellite coverage was spotty so there were a few minutes here and there where we had no picture.

Well, I guess they are listening to me! Zuiderdam is headed to Freeport as I get off tomorrow, and they are tearing out the sports bar, and extending the piano bar and rebranding the space "Billboard". It's the right answer. Don't do it badly. Piano bar is a well tuned concept.

I personally would vote for Synchronized Team Skating or a good Drum Corp or Marching Band Competition on screen in the sports bar. :D

Studies have shown that participants in those sports are in far better aerobic condition, and in some cases, have greater core strength, than many players in other sports.

It's time to see some true athletes on the screen.

I'm not sure if you were being completely sarcastic, but I would imagine that skaters have exceptional core strength.

I hope you have not insulted people who have practiced years to excel in those activities.

Yes, they do have a SB party. And that would be one sports party out f 365 days. Sports is not just about he SuperBowl (we host our own SB party from our winter home) but about lots of other events. And you mentioned about 100 persons at SB Party....which makes us wonder about the other passengers (more then a 1000).
