Teppanyaki

Had a wonderful trip on the Escape last week, met a lot of wonderful people, enjoyed the ports (although we've been there before) and actually won a bit of money in the casino. Only 1 not so good experience. Had dinner in Teppanyaki which has always been a favorite of ours. Unfortunately, the service was at its worst. Arrived at 5:55 for a 6:00 reservation & was seated immediately. Ordered drinks shortly after being seated. At 6:30 when we had not received said cocktails nor any food, I quietly got up, went to the Matre'd & explained politely that I was extremely unhappy & advised her if we didn't have our drinks & dinner was not started in the next 10 minutes, we were leaving. She was very apologetic & went to speak to our waiter & chef. Within 5 minutes, we had our drinks & the beginning of our meal. The chef was great and so was the food. At the end, our waiter came around to collect our cards & I explained to him (twice) as I gave him my card that I paid for our dinners when I made the reservations online. Off he went & then returned with, you guessed it, a bill for 3 dinners. Although I was beyond annoyed, I politely explained to him again that our dinners were already paid for & I wanted to see the bill credited which after 15 minutes he returned to say had been done. I then went to guest services to make sure this had in fact been done which they assured me it had. Much to my surprise the next day, we received a bottle of wine with a note of apology as well as a message on the phone from the restaurant manager apologizing again. Further more, they credited back the cost of our dinner which I really didn't expect. All of this proved to me that NCL really does care what we as passengers think. It also proved to me that if you deal with an issue when it happens, they do respond. Two nights later we went to Cagney's where the service and food were excellent. The next morning I went to guest services and restaurant desk and told them how wonderful our dinner at Cagney's was. Although I'm not sure when our next cruise will be, I do know it will be on an NCL ship!

Great story! Sometimes they get things wrong, but it's never intentional, and it's great when they make up for it.

At Teppanyaki, was the entire table seated on time? I ask because once we were at a table with our party of 3, and there was another party of 2 there. We sat forever because they were waiting for others to arrive to fill the table. After 20 minutes or so, we let them know that we were going to miss a show reservation if they didn't get started! They did quickly after that, and it was a great experience.

Glad to hear your comments. We usually cruise with friends on Carnival but last year we took our Grandson on the Escape after he returned from his deployment . Have to say that everything on NCL was outstanding First class in every sense of the word.

There were 7 of us at the table and I understand waiting a few minutes for others to arrive. NCL says they will hold a reservation for 15 minutes. If we had received our drinks during that time, I might have been ok with waiting for a little while but not 35 minutes. That just wasn't acceptable.

Yeah, no kidding! I wouldn't have been okay with that at all.

In our case, they weren't waiting on anyone in particular. They were just hoping some walk-ins came so they could fill the table. I can see why they'd want to do that, but there must be a limit, as you pointed out.

It also proved to me that if you deal with an issue when it happens, they do respond.

What usually happens here on CC is...

  1. Person has a bad experience while on the ship.
  2. Person doesn't want to seem "pushy" or be one to complain so they hold things in and don't get the issue resolved.
  3. Person comes to CC after the cruise and vents with the expectation of sympathy or a warm forum group hug.
  4. Someone (such as Two Wheels Only) posts that the person should have spoken up while on the ship and had the issue resolved.
  5. Other forum members complain that the OP shouldn't be "scolded" or "talked down to" by those giving the correct advice.

I'm glad that you were able to have things corrected and enjoyed your cruise.

It sounds like you spoke up, as you should have after waiting an unreasonable amount of time. It also sounds like NCL responded appropriately. Thank you for sharing your story with a happy ending, rather than simply holding your complaints inside, not sharing them with NCL at the time, and venting them on CC after the fact!

Hope it’s ok to ask this.... I have a booking for Teppanyaki on Epic next week, there will be 6 in our party. Will others be seated with us?

Not sure about Epic but I remember seating for 8 on the ships we've been on. It's likely, if they have a party of 2 needing a reservation, they might be seated with you. They try to fill the tables.
