You can have tea at the Burj al Arab. Takes a couple of hours.

Appreciate this great suggestion and follow-up. Fortunately for us on our 20-day Oceania Nautica sailing from Athens, they will have a 4 pm "Tea Time" each day. And, it will feature a string quartet playing at this event. For us, we might not do tea in Dubai, but I am sure it is very well done at this UAE location. Wonderful sharing and tip. Keep it coming.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Terry I have not been following the thread the past month or two.

I do hope that if you are visiting Abu Dhabi that you will visit the Sheikh Zayed Mosque. I don't ever think we have seen a mosque quite like this one. This and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Muscat are two that we will never forget.

YES!! Keith, we are planning to visit this famed mosque in Abu Dhabi. Plus, also hope to experience the one you mentioned for Muscat. Am continuing to planning and prepare for this "adventure" in just about three months. The excitement is building!! Appreciate these great suggestions and follow-ups.

We stayed in Dubai for three nights a couple of years ago in the Arabian Courtyard Hotel, which is in the old town rather than the super new part, and we got a totally different experience, which I would recommend. The hotel was right opposite the Dubai Museum and a short walk to the creek which is great for a stroll or to pick up a ferry like on the pic you posted in #25 to the gold souk and other areas near there.

We also booked on Viator for an authentic lunch (again very nearby in a restored old area) which gave a lot of information about life in Dubai. I will give a link to that on another post in case it is pulled, but that lunch and a walk around that area is also highly recommended.

We also stayed in Abu Dhabi for three nights last winter, but we were not that impressed. Perhaps we did not find the right places though. Super modern has no interest to us.

They do other meals as well, but not on every day, so you will have to see what is available. They also have a website and are happy to reply to queries. You can easily view the area near that hotel on Google Earth, which I use a lot.

Enjoy your jaunt,

Appreciate these helpful posts from Barbara. Very good for understanding the many excellent options in this area. We will be staying at the Habtoor Grand Resort, a part of Marriott's Autograph Collection. It overlooks Jumeirah Beach in Dubai. If booked post-cruise in Dubai, keep checking back for any better pricing deals.

From the Financial Tribune in the Middle East last month, they had this headline:Dubai Hotel Rates Fall Due to Supply Rise with these highlights: “The average room rates of Dubai hotels dropped due to an increase in supply, hitting a 14-year low during the month of July. According to statistics provided by STR, the average daily rate fell 9.7% to Dh423.63 ($115.33) while demand expanded by 7.2% and supply grew by 6.3%. Occupancy levels rose 0.9% to 66%. During the first half of this year, more than 2,600 keys were added to Dubai's hospitality sector, with the opening of 10 high-end properties.

It's "supply and demand" at work. Maybe good news for us? Checked back with Marriott yesterday and got an oceanfront room at a lower price.

Keep up the great posts and sharing. It is now just a little over two months till we depart for Athens and boarding our Oceania Nautica on Nov. 16.

From the London/UK Sunday Times this past weekend, they had this headline: Dubai: the Big Stopover with this subhead: Where to eat and drink, what to see and do and where to stay in the world’s greatest travel hub.

Here are some of the key story highlights/tips/ideas: "Looking for a reason to have a stopover in Dubai? The world’s tallest building, desert trips, outrageously opulent hotels and a raft of new attractions. Dubai isn’t just the best-connected stopover on the planet, it’s possibly the best, full stop. Dubai is the UAE’s capital of shameless excess, but before oil was discovered in 1966, this was essentially a fishing village hemmed by sea and sand. You can still catch glimpses of Old Dubai, starting with a mooch around the Deira Grand Souk, a scented riot of spices and souvenirs. (Rule of thumb: knock 50% off the asking price, then haggle for another 25% off that.) The hippest hangout in Dubai is The Walk, a buzzing beachside boulevard. Lined with more than 300 boutiques and cafes, department stores and pop-up market stalls. The main entertainment lies in Al Habtoor City: La Perle, a 90-minute Cirque du Soleil-style extravaganza with acrobats, motorbike stunts, lasers and dancers. Beach, tech and arty alternatives for you this morning. Marina Beach is the pick of the first, with gently shelving white sands and bath-warm waters."

Lots of excellent ideas to consider as we research and plan for our first visit to Dubai in early December.

From the Sydney Morning Herald and other newspapers in Australia, they had this headline:Travel photography: How to take great travel photos with these highlights: In these snap-happy times, great travel photography is rarer than ever. Travel photography has never been more popular, more prevalent or more pertinent than it is now, thanks to the liberty unleashed by the likes of the iPhone, Instagram and Facebook. But, in this digital day and age, when everyone can be a photographer, what makes a truly great travel photograph?

Many specific tips and visual examples are included with this helpful and interesting article. Below are some samples featured by these experts from in and around Dubai. Thought I would share this post here as we will be in these locations for the first time in later November and early December when we also do our first exploring in the Holy Lands, Egypt, etc. Aren't these pictures below so spectacular and exciting?

Among the specific tips suggested in this article are: "Take only as much equipment as you can comfortably march with. Take time to stop and look around, assessing the situation. Remember to look back in the direction from which you came. Find a good place to park yourself, which has an interesting space to frame up with, allowing you to shoot people and things as they move through. Always be courteous and polite with people." There were also warnings for common mistakes to avoid. This includes: "Keeping the camera constantly up to your eye as you walk around. You need to put it down, look around you, think about what the best frames are, and the best ways to use them."

Another key insight offered was: "a good travel story needs broad pictures of the environment, great pictures of people that give some sense of their existence, and interesting detail pictures that tell what people are living with in terms of transport, food, interiors".

From the London/UK Telegraph today, they have this headline: 25 best destinations for winter sunwith both Dubai and Abu Dhabi highlighted as options to consider.

Here are some of their comments for both locations: “The biggest of the United Arab Emirates does not have the glamour factor of Dubai. But, it makes for a fine refuge from winter. Add in Abu Dhabi's attraction, including the newly opened Louvre and not least the beaches, stylish hotels and high-end restaurants of Las Island.”

Below are two of their visuals featured. Looks great and exciting!! There are helpful links for both of these locations.

Apart from being pretty good value for money, it saves time lining up.

From the Travel Section today of the London/UK Times, they had this headline: All aboard Dubai’s latest hotel, the QE2 with these highlights: The iconic ocean liner the Queen Elizabeth 2 is now a hotel, permanently moored in Dubai and officially opening next month. Her 224 rooms, with cafés, bars, restaurants and public areas, are a mix of 21st-century mod cons and tasteful homage to the days of flared trousers and Formica when the grande dame of the North Atlantic gracefully ploughed her way from Southampton to New York. She’s had quite a history; the QE2 slid down into the waters of the Clyde in September 1967 and over four decades in service from 1969 carried more than four million passengers, including Nelson Mandela and Ringo Starr, as well as the Queen herself.

Interesting story!! Don't think we will want to stay on this ship while in Dubai. Won't be our highest priority. We will have already had 20 days sailing on the Oceania Nautica. Prefer to switch to a beach-side type of resort for our three days in Dubai. But, with all of the unique hotel and building designs in Dubai, this historic QE2 will offer another special options from which to choose for where to stay.

However, you won’t have to travel anywhere to see it as she is berthed at Terminal 1 within the port and the Nautica will be to the right on this photo at either Terminal 2 or 3 which are the ones used today for visiting cruise ships. 😀

Appreciate this nice added background and follow-up about where the Queen Elizabeth 2 docks and how close it will be to the Nautica's tie-up location. Our friends did say that it was still special; but not as good as they hoped for. A lot depends on prior light show experiences. It should still be a great anniversary treat for you.

I don’t think you would be able to see the laser show from the ship as it is only projected onto one side of the Burj Khalifa and that’s the side that faces Downtown as opposed to the sea side of the tower. It’s difficult to say where the best place to see the fireworks would be until they actually announce where the displays will be. During the recent Eid celebrations there were four different locations - one off Jumeirah Beach, one over Festival City, one over Al Seef area (which is quite near to the port) and one other which I don’t recall just now. As far as I’m aware there are no plans to repeat the fireworks on the Burj Khalifa as the area is now too built up and traffic became a real issue - I think they learned from the incident a couple of years ago when the Address Hotel caught fire just a few hours before midnight and the area was packed with people and jammed with traffic. Fortunately everyone survived that night and whilst fireworks weren’t a contributing factor I think it did raise awareness... If I see or hear anything about plans for NYE, I’ll post an update on here...

Thank you so much -a waiter on Silhouette in August did tell us about the fire and said he doubted there would fireworks at Burj area.

This is what I love about CC - people's generosity with information.

Ruth

I just checked local newspaper reports from last NYE and there were 4 locations for firework displays.. The Burj Khalifa having the laser light show.

They were Global Village which is an out of town entertainment venue with different pavilions from various countries. Dubai Festival City - this is a waterside retail and residential development at the head of the Creek not a shoreside venue beside the beach. Jumeirah Beach/Kite Beach - this is a large public beach area beside the Burj Al Arab and Jumeirah Beach Hotel.. Although in direct line along the shoreline from the cruise port it is quite a distance so I'm not sure whether you would see much. The final venue was the Palm Jumeirah based around the Atlantis Hotel, which again is quite a way from the cruise port..

With the QE2 being fully operational as a hotel by then, I would be surprised if there would not be something in that part of the city for NYE too but I haven't seen or heard anything yet...
