From the New York Times Travel Section this morning, they had this headline: 36 Hours in Chiang Mai with these highlights: Glorious temples and traditional markets are what this riverside city in Thailand is known for. Now, thanks to a blossoming creative scene, there are also new, ambitious restaurants and plenty of contemporary art and design to complement the old.

When visiting Bangkok earlier this year, we did not have an opportunity to see and explore more of this unique and historic country, including Chiang Mai. But, it sounds interesting and worthy of time there. Maybe on our next trip to Southeast Asia? For more on Bangkok, see my live/blog connected below. Post on that live/blog with any questions about these wonderful areas we experienced in our first visit to this region of the world.

Here is another highlight from this NY Times profile: "Traditionally, tourists have trekked to the star of Thailand’s north in search of M.E.A.T.: markets, elephants, artisans and temples. And Chiang Mai, a laid-back old riverside city whose population (fewer than 200,000) is a fraction of Bangkok’s (more than eight million), obliges those fantasies. But these days the 700-year-old city is brimming with far more modern attractions, too, namely the works of artists and designers."

Appreciate this added information and follow-ups. Very helpful sharing!! Keep it coming. On cool weather, one of the guides for our Southeast Asia trip said that Bangkok has just two weather seasons: hot . . . and HOTTER!! It was very, very warmer there in January. Can't image how warm it would be in the summer, etc. Yes, hotter!!??

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

You are welcome. We had done the overnight Train from Bangkok to Chiangmai a few time. The Loi Krathong is spectacular, you may release lanterns, float lighted flowers down the river, give alms to the monks who will be out in the evening during that period etc. We did a tour to the White Temple and also Tribes villages ie. Long neck, dress in Lanna period costume for photoshoot etc.
