Hong Kong: NY Times 36 Hours Profile, Tips, etc.!!

From the New York Times Travel Section this coming Sunday morning, they will have this headline: "36 Hours in Hong Kong" with these highlights: "As impressive as Hong Kong’s skyline is, the city never seems to stop building. With all this attention on infrastructure, though, Hong Kong hasn’t sacrificed its soul. It remains one of Asia’s most passionately creative cities, a playground for artists and designers, chefs and entrepreneurs. Kowloon, the congested district opposite Hong Kong Island, for instance, is getting a makeover as the sprawling West Kowloon Cultural District begins opening over the next few years. While other newly rich Chinese cities vie for tourist dollars, it is cultural endeavors like this that will keep Hong Kong in the spotlight — and as confident as ever."

We have not yet visited SE Asia and we are starting to plan for a trip that includes Hong Kong, Vietnam, Angkor Wat and Singapore. Starting to read more and research on Hong Kong. Saw this major story coming in Sunday's NY Times. Thought that I would share it here and get added reactions, suggestions from those who have been here and in this region. Share here your best ideas, secrets, suggestions, etc.!!

Among the other story details are: "Odd as it may seem, this skyscraper-studded city is a hiker’s paradise. One of the most accessible hikes to the bustling city center is the Dragon’s Back. When it comes to shopping, Hong Kong is known for its electronics and luxury goods. Now, you can add good design to that list." There are lots of suggestions for various dining, entertainment, drinking options, etc.

Terry, so glad you are looking at SE Asia for your next visit. So much to do and see. Keith

Appreciate this follow-up and encouragement from the super smart/savvy Keith. One of our options being considered for early 2018 is the Crystal Serenity for their Manila to Singapore, March 12 - 28, 2018, 16-day sailing. Are you planning to do that 2018 World Cruise? Of special interest for us are the options to see and do much involving Vietnam and Angkor Wat, plus the decent time allowed for Singapore, Hong Kong, Manila. Any quick, preliminary reactions, thoughts? Biggest loves with this routing? Can chat more, in-detail, later off-line.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

From our Jan. 25-Feb. 20, 2015, Amazon River-Caribbean combo sailing over 26 days that started in Barbados, here is the link below to that live/blog. Lots of great visuals from this amazing Brazil river and these various Caribbean Islands (Dutch ABC's, St. Barts, Dominica, Grenada, etc.) that we experienced. Check it out at:

Hi Terry:

That is a very nice itinerary.

Several positive are the overnight in Manila, essentially three full days in Hong Kong to see it both during the daytime and evening hours, almost two days in Saigon as that will give you the opportunity to see the downtown area one day and also get out to other areas the following day, and ending in Singapore which we adore. Lots to see there.

Only downside is the port that serves Hanoi. If you want to see Hanoi they will offer a tour but the drive is around three hours each way. Overnight would have been better, but itineraries are all about tradeoffs that most of what I see is very positive.

I also like that there is five sea days to not only enjoy the ship but to also rest up from full day tours in port.

We can definitely chat more off line but this looks great.

Keith

Have you consider a small ship?

Won't get you to the Phillipines or Singapore but for the others look at Vantage's MYSTERIES OF ANKOR WAT and the MEKONG RIVER.

Appreciate this great feed-back from Keith. Will be studying the options more' date=' chatting additionally in the future, etc. On[b'] Vantage cruises[/b], I have looked at their website. Their profile/background seems interesting. Their ship for this area is fairly small with only 30 rooms or suites. Will check and consider more!! Keep the nice ideas, options and sharing rolling along. Very helpful.

Thanks for that link Terry. We are also interested in a cruise in that area in Asia. Just a few days ago we got an offer by Celebrity for a cruise December 9 leaving singapore on ms Summit. A long stay in Bangkok makes a visit to Angkor Wat possible.

Besides this cruise they have some other interesting ones. Check this link: http://www.celebritycruises.com/cruise-search/search-results?cruisesOnly=Y&isWidget=false&dest=FAR.E&sailStartDate=ANY&sailEndDate=ANY&ship=ML&port=SIN#&dest=FAR.E&isWidget=false&sortBy=7&selectedInput=&cruiseType=CO&cruisesOnly=Y&accessCabin=&includeAdjascentPorts=Y&state=&captain_id=&couponCodes=&isSenior=&isMilitary=&isFireandPolice=&sailStartDate=ANY&sailEndDate=ANY&port=SIN&duration=ANY&port=SIN&ship=ML&startRow=0

Since we are still in Mexico that link might give Mexican Pesos, but of course once you check the US or europe Celebrity site prices will be in other currency.

Terry,

We love Hong Kong and Singapore. I first visited Hong Kong in 1981 then in 2012 and 2015. There is a lot to do there. Of course, the number one item on your list should be Victoria's Peak. A day tour of the city will normally include this as well as Aberdeen Harbor and Impulse Bay.

Nan Lian Garden is wonderful and you can get there from a public transit stop.

Also, Cheung Chau Island is like going back into time. You can get there by ferry. There are no cars on the island. Went there in 1981 and it felt like we were in the 19th Century.

Singapore is a great place. We spent five days there pre-cruise last March. Do the island tour that emphasizes the WWII history and Japanese invasion. The airport is very close to the old prison where Allied POWs were kept. Chinatown, boat ride in the old town, visit to the Botanical Gardens and Marina Bay Gardens are on the list as well. If you have time go to the historical Raffles Hotel where the Singapore Sling was created.

I am sure the SE Asia cruise is good, but others have complained that cities like Hanoi and Bangkok involve terrible long drives from the port.

We have just booked on Connie from Singapore to Hong Kong, Vietnam, Philippines and Borneo 5th March 2017. We have no clue what to do anywhere so lots of research is needed.

Except for Singapore which we have been to before Has any of you got any "must sees" for a first outing to these stops please?

Many Thanks

Appreciate Ine's follow-up suggestion and mention on Celebrity's sailing options in Southeast Asia. YES, we are aware of that cruise line and have done two different cruises with them on their Solstice ship. Both worked well, including for Sydney to Auckland, plus in the Med as detailed below with my live/blog.

Our friend from Georgia's scenic coast, 4774Papa, provides some excellent details and wonderful options to consider for both Hong Kong and Singapore. Very helpful and beneficial sharing. Keep it up!! Let us know your loves and success stories from being in these two famed cities and their nearby areas.

For our future SE Asia potentials, we are probably focused on one of these two options:

A: Use of one of three or four luxury or major cruise line options, Hong Kong to Singapore (or in reverse order), to have key stops in Vietnam, etc., plus an excursion that reaches Angkor Wat, etc.

B: Doing a stop enroute for either Hong Kong and/or Singapore, but using a river cruise to explore more in-depth for internal parts of Cambodia and Vietnam, including Angkor Wat, etc.

Added reactions, thoughts, experiences, suggestions, etc.?? Am getting the colorful and graphic DK travel books from our local library that will provide me more details on Cambodia and Vietnam to help us in researching these many options.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

From the London/UK Telegraph in mid March, they have this headline: "Fascinating early images of Hong Kong" with one of these highlights regarding the various visuals: "Hong Kong became a British colony after the First Opium War (1839–42), at which time its population was 7,450. Few could have guessed this tiny outpost of the Empire would eventually become a sprawling metropolis of more than seven million people."

Interesting background for Hong Kong and its growth. That includes this item: "Hong Kong grew rapidly after the Second World War. 2.2m lived there in 1950; this grew to around 5.2m in 1982."

Appreciate these various comments and follow-ups regarding Hong Kong. We are now getting closer to our Jan. 21 departure date to fly to Hong Kong for the first time. A little over four months till we depart. After four days there in Hong Kong, we will fly to Bangkok, fly to Ho Minh City, then starting a seven-day cruise up the Mekong River and into Cambodia, doing Angkor Wat, then flying to Hanoi and various added stops in Vietnam.

From Canada's Globe and Mail newspaper last month, they have an interesting profile for options in Hong Kong with limited time there. Among the story highlights/options for a late-night taste of the famous city are: board the historic Star Ferry, taking passengers across Victoria Harbour since 1888. Purchase tokens ($2.70 HKD each) from machine to take us from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon; admire the two-storey, green-and-white wooden boat and its sailor-uniformed staff as we board; head for the open-top deck for cheap and scenic 10-minute voyage”.

This profile also suggests:

"keep strolling to admire the historic Peninsula Hotel, wander into lobby, soak in its elegance and marvel at its colonial and wartime history"

"Ritz-Carlton's Ozone Bar. This hotel fills 16 floors of the 1,588 feet high International Commerce Centre, the tallest building in Hong Kong; anyone can visit the Ozone Bar but ground-floor staff prescreen for suitability. Outdoor patio with bird's eye, panoramic views of Victoria Harbour. Speechless. Multilevel soaring windows surround us; eye-popping view only matched by eye-watering prices."

"Late-night dim sum. Flag another cab; direct it to nearby Hau Fook Street, an unassuming laneway packed with cheap Asian restaurants and our best chance of finding a kitchen still open. Slide into a booth at Caterking Dim Sum just in time; with help from the staff and menu pictures, order dizzying mixture of shrimp and pork dumplings, shrimp spring rolls."

Sounds like wonderful options to consider and do for sampling Hong Kong.

Any suggestions for a private guide & driver to show us Lantau Island from the ship's port?

You might want to check with "ToursByLocals" at this website:

We are working with Amy in order to set-up our options for late January 2018 on our first visit to SE Asia. In June, we used several guides through this firm for Bordeaux, Brittany, Lisbon, etc., and were well pleased with both their tour leaders and how the web system worked.

For those who do not want to pay the price of private guides I can say that Hong Kong is extremely efficient and very easy to get around using public transport.

For people going to Asia for the first time, best do your homework thoroughly. It is a huge region and has an enormous variation in the cultures and levels of development. Hong Kong and Singapore are wealthy parts of the developed world. Cambodia is still very poor. Malaysia sits in the middle. The countries are no more similar than Mexico is to the US in Nth America.

Trying to decide between Salisbury YMCA Hotel and Holidau Inn Golden Mile, Hong Kong. Any advice is appreciated. Thank You

In late January, we stayed at the Salisbury YMCA and were very well pleased with this hotel's great value, super location, quality service and spectacular views, etc.

We are now back from our first river boat sailing and for sampling Southeast Asia. It was for the Mekong River!! Plus, plus!!

Well-pleased with these countries, especially Cambodia, plus the ship, staff, food, tours, etc. On my live/blog, connected below, there are dozens of pictures and many details to document these fun adventures and travels. This includes so much from Hong Kong. Happy on the live/blog to answer any and all questions, share more info/background, etc.

Now, we shift our focus and attention to mid November, 2018, for our Athens to Dubai, 20-day cruise with Oceania, including our first visits to the Holy Lands, Egypt, Middle East, etc. Many options to consider and logistics to research. Keep hearing great things from other travelers about Oceania, the staff, their food, etc. Look forward to comparing Oceania versus other cruise lines we have experienced, who has what plus and minus factors, etc.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Greetings from Hong Kong...

I am really excited as I will be starting my first Alaska Cruise on board Explorer of the SEAS this Friday. Did a lot of research on the ports and do realize how difficult this can be (comparing to my past cruises 10+ years ago). Hence, I'm offering to answer any questions regarding Hong Kong if any of you are planning to visit as a cruise port.

I live in Hong Kong -- on Lantau Island actually and will be able to answer and hopefully clear up any confusion that our fellow CC friend might have. Just for the record, I am not a TA nor tour operator -- just trying to help out.

Will try to check in from time to time to see if anyone have any questions.

Cheers and happy cruising...

From the BBC earlier this month, they had this headline: “Asia's capital of connection” with this sub-head: "Hong Kong has been both a part of Imperial China and the British Empire – giving it the East-meets-West vibe that locals love." Many, many interesting details and visuals are included as a part of this profile. Worth checking out!!

Here were some key story highlights: Once a small fishing and farming village, Hong Kong is now among the world’s busiest ports and most important centres of trade. 'Hong Kong is a busy metropolis still steeped in Chinese tradition,' said seven-year resident Ski Yeo, a founder of walking tour company Big Foot Tour. 'Take the architecture. Regardless of how modern or progressive the building seems – like the HSBC building by Lord Norman Foster and Bank of China by IM Pei – many of these buildings were built with the concept of Chinese feng shui in mind.' For example, the HSBC building has an open atrium ground floor, thought to allow wind and good qi (energy) in.
