Hi Terry

This was our day there in 2013. We just got an all-day travel ticket (€6 then). I wasted so much time queuing for a very ordinary ride in the Santa Justa elevator that I was unable to go to the famous pasteis shop in Belem  Hey ho, you can't win 'em all.

All the best for June, Tony

From the London/UK Guardian earlier this week, they have this headline: “The best of Lisbon’s new restaurants with this subhead: The Portuguese capital’s food scene is one of the most exciting in Europe right now, offering a mix of innovative and traditional cuisine at restaurants overseen by acclaimed chefs.

Lots of different food ideas and places to try/experience. Always fun to be dining in Lisbon and Portugal.

For cruisers who only have one day in port, I DO NOT recommend the citysightseeing hop on hop off bus. We tried to use it this month and had horrendous experience. We bought our tickets online and downloaded to my phone. The line at the stop by the ship was long, full of other cruisers. They had a staff member stationed there and I showed him my phone and he said wait in line. After 25 minutes and 2 buses, the driver refused to let us on because the tickets were not printed!! The staff offered no help in trying to get them printed. we walked around and found a university reception desk that helped us. 45 minutes later we are getting on the next bus. The top deck of the buses are always full, and the bottom are stifling hot with no air conditioning and only 4 tiny window vents for the whole lower section. The red line is thru a heavy traffic area and you could walk faster that the bus travelled , plus they wait at some stops 10-15 minutes.! The narration is very limited and they don't announce which stop you are at so its not easy to follow along on their map. We wasted all day sitting in traffic and didn't even complete one loop.. we got off at one stop and upon return waited 45 minutes for the next bus. DO NOT waste your money..and your valuable time!

Appreciate these above very good cautions and concerns. As we have traveled around the world, we have seen many cases where there are serious questions as to whether such hop-on and hop-off buses are the best or ideal option to use. On the other hand, however, twice we have used this option and it works super well. Once was in Barcelona after a long trans-Atlantic flight. The weather was great and the views perfect from the top level as we sampled the wonderful architecture, art, history, style, etc., of this spectacular Spanish city. Second was last year after a Panama Canal cruise after we arrive in San Francisco. That also worked very well and allowed an excellent vantage point for super pictures and viewings.

These buses are not cheap. BUT, it might work. Or, not!! Don't assume that this is always the best, most efficient way to sample a city. Much depends on he situation, your luck, number of people in the port that day, etc.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Here's a separate link to a full review of Lisbon that I did...

Nice postings and pictures from Richard. Brings back wonderful memories of Lisbon from just one year ago.

From the London/UK Guardian late last month, they have this headline: best rooftop bars in Europe with these highlights: This is the top level of a car park in Bairro Alto that has been turned into a garden terrace. Park is not the easiest place to find and you do wonder if you are in the right place as you’re walking through an eerily quiet multistorey car park covered in graffiti, but the views over the city and the River Tagus are totally worth it. The terrace is covered in plants so you feel cut off from the hustle and bustle below. We visited in the evening and an impromptu dance-off between break dancers provided some lively entertainment. Excellent selection of beers and good simple food.

From the London/UK Evening Standard today, they have this headline: best last-minute travel destinations with these highlights: A short train ride from Lisbon you’ll find the magical town of Sintra. Pena Palace is the standout star of this town with its elaborate tilework, but our favourite spot has to be Quinta da Regaleira for the abundant greenery and Instagram-worthy Initiation Well.

From the New York Times this morning, they have this headline: Portugal Dared to Cast Aside Austerity. It’s Having a Major Revival with these highlights: At a time of mounting uncertainty in Europe, the country has defied critics who insisted on austerity as the answer to the Continent’s economic and financial crisis.

Much of this major profile is about economics/politics. But, it provides many details as to how their prosperity is happening now. Here are more story highlights that might be of interest: "At a time of mounting uncertainty in Europe, Portugal has defied critics who have insisted on austerity as the answer to the Continent’s economic and financial crisis. While countries from Greece to Ireland — and for a stretch, Portugal itself — toed the line, Lisbon resisted, helping to stoke a revival that drove economic growth last year to its highest level in a decade. The renewal is visible just about everywhere. Hotels, restaurants and shops have opened in droves, fueled by a tourism surge that has helped cut unemployment in half. In the Beato district of Lisbon, a mega-campus for start-ups rises from the rubble of a derelict military factory. The economic about-face had a remarkable impact on Portugal’s collective psyche. While discouragement lingers in Greece after a decade of spending cuts, Portugal’s recovery has pivoted around restoring confidence to get people and businesses motivated again."

It's hot, HOT, HOT!! in Lisbon. From the Associated Press/AP newswire this morning, they had this headline: Lisbon breaks record for maximum temp, hits 44 C (111.2 F) with these highlights: Lisbon broke a 37-year-old record to notch its hottest temperature ever as an unrelenting heat wave baked Portugal and neighboring Spain. New heat records were set in 26 places around Portugal. The day’s hottest temperature of 46.8 C (116.2 F) was recorded at Alvega in the center of Portugal. The country’s highest temperature on record is 47.4 C (117.3 F) from 2003.

From the Wall Street Journal this morning, they had this headline: Vacation in Portugal the Less-Obvious Way with this sub-headline: "Travelers are mobbing the country’s coast in record numbers. But for fewer tourist hordes, deeply rooted charm and one hell of a stargazing party, head to the rural heart of the Alentejo."

Here are more story highlights including a comparison to two decades ago when only 235,000 American visited: By the time I returned in 2016, I had a lot more company. The number of Americans visiting annually soared to 564,000. Since 2015, air capacity between Portugal and the U.S. doubled. This year, Portugal expects around 900,000 Americans—one wave in a tsunami of 25 million tourists drawn by the country’s affordability, food, wine and cultural depth.

Yes, good news for the popularity of Portugal, but maybe it is also smart to look at and consider other potentials and areas to sample in this charming nation. For this one area, the writer shared: "Despite covering nearly one third of the country’s area, the Alentejo is home to only a touch more than 7% of the population. Only about 4% of the Americans who visited Portugal in 2017 bothered to make the trek, though Evora, Alentejo’s picturesque capital is less than a two-hour drive from Lisbon (and nearly three hours from the regions of the Algarve currently afflicted with wildfires)."

From the London/UK Daily Mail earlier this week, they had this headline: Lonely Planet reveals the world's 500 best meals with highlights about food in Lisbon among: the top food experiences in the world by the travel experts at Lonely Planet. They come top of a mouth-watering list of the world's best 500 culinary experiences that Lonely Planet has ranked for a new tome titled the Ultimate Eatlist - a foodie bucket-list that takes into account not just the taste, but the atmosphere that dishes are eaten in. At pastry stores in Lisbon, Portugal, the Lonely Planet experts say visitors will find the ultimate egg tart.

YES!! We super loved both the settings in and around Lisbon, plus the excellent tasty foods we enjoyed there. Below is one of the many visuals featured with this story. Brings great memories from visiting there last year. More on my full live/blog about nearby top-ranked San Sebastian in NW Spain.

From the Travel Section of the London/UK Telegraph in mid September, they had this headline: Is overtourism turning Lisbon into the next Venice? with these highlights: “Few destinations have witnessed a boom in tourism over the last few years quite like Portugal. According to the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), the country welcomed 6.8m overseas arrivals in 2010. By 2016 that figure had grown to 18.2m – an increase of 168 per cent. Last week Portugal’s economics minister reported that tourism revenue increased by 17 per cent, year-on-year, in 2017, and a further 14 per cent so far in 2018. But at what cost to the experience of both visitors and locals? Unchecked tourism is good for the economy – but it causes problems. Rapid growth means strained infrastructure and overcrowding in big cities and at major attractions.

Also in the article, it is shared: "In both Lisbon and Porto the central downtown areas have become more or less only for tourists. Lisbon’s Baixa district covers 1.5 square kilometres and now has more than 70 hotels, while tourist-oriented restaurants, souvenir shops and big international brands have displaced local businesses." Also included was these details: "Mary Lussiana, Telegraph Travel’s Portugal expert, agrees with the assessment. 'Lisbon is suffering the most, with the narrow cobbled streets so crowded with tourists, particularly in areas such as Chiado, that it is hard to walk around. Locals talk of an invasion and tell stories of long-time tenants being kicked out of their houses to make room for Airbnbs."

From the Travel Section of the London/UK Sunday Times, they will have this headline tomorrow: “30 best cultural holidays in Europe”  with this sub-head: "From art and architecture to film festivals and classical concerts, here is the pick of Europe’s hot tickets".

One of top Europe locations featured is Lisbon.  Here is the highlight featured for this star city: “Travel to Portugal’s capital in mid-July and you can combine two distinct musical festivals. Super Bock Super Rock always has a good line-up, but this year’s is exceptional: Lana del Rey, Jungle, Janelle Monáe, Metronomy, Cat Power, Christine and the Queens, and Charlotte Gainsbourg are playing alongside emerging Portuguese acts (July 18-20, superbocksuperrock.pt). Happening simultaneously is the summer-long Somersby Out Jazz — free jazz concerts amid the Jardim da Estrela’s exotic plants in July (ncs.pt). Grab a lemon ice cream en route from the nearby gelateria Nannarella at 64 Rua Nova da Piedade (nannarella.pt).
Where to stay In a former army arsenal, the 28-room townhouse Almalusa has B&B doubles from €202 (00 351 212 697 440, almalusahotels.com)”
