Access to Ports of Rosyth and Newcastle

Thinking of taking a cruise from either Rosyth or Newcastle, but will want to take the train from/to Liverpool to get there. We would obviously be looking for a hotel for a night pre cruise (possibly 2 nights if in Rosyth as we would like to spend a day in Edinburgh).

Hotels seem to be expensive in Edinburgh, but I have found the 'Double Tree by Hilton' in Rosyth at a reasonable price. Would that work and would we be able to use public transport between the main train station, hotel and the port, or would we need expensive taxis? Also, could we get into the city for a day easily if we stay two nights?

If we sail from/to Newcastle, is there any public transport between the port and the city centre, or does Fred run shuttles - if so at what cost? We have sailed from Newcastle previously, so know the port is a way out of town.

Realise you indicated about taking the train but did you know Eavesway operate to Newcastle from Liverpool?

I can't think taxis would be that costly - why not give the hotel a call and ask about local connection prices.

Getting over to Edinburgh is straightforward enough - trains form North Queensferry - buses from Ferrytoll Park & Ride.

If you fancy a drive up to Fife, you can leave your car free of charge at Ferrytoll - we've done that when going on holiday.

We are not completely sure we would do a cruise from those ports, but the appeal is that there are quite a selection of cruises since both Balmoral and Boudicca are heading that way. We could take a car, but train is far more appealing if we do not need a lot of luggage.

Coach travel is not comfortable and the idea is to spend some time in Edinburgh or Newcastle area as well as doing the cruise, so the coach would not be suitable anyway. We invariably take the start of a holiday in a relaxed fashion by staying overnight at a port or airport, unless leaving from somewhere very near home.

The City Hotel in Dunfermline is probably as good as any - not far from bus station, and the railway station isn't much further.

All that info about the Edinburgh area is exactly what I wanted, thanks WeeCountyMan. I was considering Dumfermline and have also found a Premier Inn in Leith near to where the Royal Yatch is moored and I would like to see that - OK not near Rosyth, but easy to get into the centre of Edinburgh to travel on to Rosyth.

Thinking on it Scotland probably has more interest than a cruise, so may skip the latter. Have not been to Scotland for a while, but travelled to all sorts of far flung places in between:)

As said above Dunfermline is a much better bet if you wish to stay in a hotel prior to the cruise. It is only 4 miles from the cruise terminal at Rosyth. From there you can catch the ship by taxi, bus or train(via Inverkeithing). Although Edinburgh has all the major attractions Dunfermline has a lot to offer as a tourist.

Thanks Parsman for confirming that Dumfermline is a good base. Yes, the smaller towns are normally much more pleasant places to stay and explore as well. Our plans are a bit uncertain at present, but we will make it there sometime soon - 4 miles away sounds an easy taxi journey,
