Free from plastic

Good to hear that Royal Carribean,Azamara and Celebrity cruises are forming a ‘plastics’ team,to help reduce the use of single-use plastic on their ships and within their corporation..such as drink bottles and straws.

I was saddened whilst sitting on The Terrace recently,to see not only paper napkins, sugar wrappers and teabag wrappers but also plastic straws, blowing day after day into the ocean.

I hope Oceania can think about this.

And what are they going to use instead? Also I have seen very little of this stuff blowing into the ocean. Would be great if no plastic gets into the sea but do not think the garbage that does comes from cruise ships.

Paper straws are available.

Plastic garbage is a major and growing problem in the world’s oceans.

forget the small stuff.....the largest offender of plastic is the WATER BOTTLE, people are so obsessed with the bottled water fad.... Back, , in the not to distant past, people would get these metal or composite containers called canteens,. They would then fill them use them and refill them... So, please step away from the water bottle.... and use a canteen... Plastic bottles today are filling our land fills and people fling them when finished..... Never seen a straw....

.. However, here in the "PEOPLES REPUBLIC of California"( where everything is either illegal or over taxed and priced) They now have a law which carries a 6 mo Jail sentence and up to $500. fine for restaurants/bars that serve plastic straws.. This comes on the heels of a proposed law that requires registration and a 3 day waiting period,if you want to view ***********....like Florida wants to do

Thus, a possible solution to the world plastic consumption is to spend more time viewing porn. ??? No plastic there!, totally eco-friendly smut may be the answer

I find this a bit much.

If a person was that concerned about the environment, surely he would cease his non-essential travel via fossil fuels... such as cruising.

A plastic straw here or there is the least of the environmentalist's worries when it's blowing of a gigantic cruise ship chugging along at 18 kts.

(I'm less conflicted: I don't buy into all the mumbo-jumbo.)

I have to agree on the environmental worries along with animal rights activists. I believe in practical conservation and environmentalism. I agree if someone is so passionate that he believes people will and are destroying the earth, Then he should realize that being a human he is contributing to that demise and he should kill himself to help stop the destruction that he might cause

There is an old saying that the difference between a working man and an environmentalist is that the working man hopes to one day have a house on the beach...........The environmentalist already has one !!

I believe there is a proposed bill on banning plastic straws but there is no law as of today.

Agree with you 100%! If this bothers you, perhaps you should cruise on the mega ships that really have an impact on the environment. In my opinion, health is also important and having wrapped items keeps passengers safe in an environment where illness can be rampant. Also, "you" (meaning any of us) do not have to take a straw or a bottle of water. Bring your own thermos and fill it on the ship.

Unless/until manufacturers provide alternatives to plastic, some of us have little choice. For instance, I purchase plastic bags by the thousands - not because I want to (I bring reusable bags into stores) but because there is nowhere to put our cat litter (it can't go into the toilet as it will clog it up and the litter would go right through paper bags). In terms of straws, I just purchased 5,000 which should last me a long time after the ban goes into effect. I would be more than willing to use paper straws but they are not available in stores where we live!

Perhaps we should ban cruise ships...... do you know how many miles to the gallon of fuel that they get (you likely don't want to know) plus they are exempt from most taxes in the U.S.:halo:

No,please tell me.I am interested on how many gallons and the tax free environmental impact.

All I know is that the plastic is not biodegradable. If you are doing comparisons please tell me how many million particles of plastic are in all our oceans.

A proposed bill banning plastic straws?? Who might be proposing that, and which nation(s)? Would any such ban in the US affect a cruise in SE Asia?

About the only thing I ever drink through a straw is an occasional milk shake, which I can just as easily do with a spoon. So, if straws were banned, I could care less, just don’t see it happening jurisdictionally.

Sounds like the straw uses the least amount of plastic than anything else. I bet the cups have 10 times the amount. And why are we talking about it on this thread anyway. Cruise ships have been very good about not dumping anything in the ocean so they are not the problem here. WE do need a solution to this major problem but this is not the place to find it. With straws?

Originally the thread was started regards single use plastic on cruise ships. If they start with something small it may make them think about other ways to impact less on the environment.

I also said I was saddened to see Oceania allowing so much to just be flippantly blown into the sea day after day. They use a lot of those serviettes made of thin paper for holding hot plates. These just blow everywhere.

We had a very stark warning in one edition of Currents, regarding us,as passengers not allowing/ throwing anything overboard because of environmental damage. That seemed a joke!

Actually they have started small. If you pay attention you will notice that they no longer have the little plastic swords that once held your garnish such as cherry, lime, orange, olive, etc. on your drinks. They now use a little piece of wood with a curlique end. These are also used as stir sticks or stir straws.

So there you go, they are making a little effort.

I didn’t cruise with them when they had plastic swords,so it would not have come to my attention.

At least it’s a start though.👍

It was announced on radio, TV and news papers yesterday that several cities in California have enacted such laws, Malibu being the most recent....

$500 fine to the waiter and up to 1 year in Jail, As reported this also applies to plastic forks knives and spoons, and I assume plates too.

For you New York folks just wait till Bloomberg gets wind of that...
