Crete - Herkalion Beach day

Would love your thoughts for a beach day while in port on Herkalion. Renting a car is an option. We are beach people, so beautiful water and nice beach is a plus. Have seen Rethymno, Hersonissos and Elounda areas. Any recommendations? Is taxi or bus even an option or car rental needed? Thanks!
