Booking Tours in Advance and Then Converting to OBC Once On Board

We are aware that we can pre-book tours with our credit cards before boarding and then convert the booking to OBC once on board and getting a credit for what we put on the credit card. Question is does this credit go back on the credit card, or does it go on account as refundable OBC and if not used be returned in cash at the end of the cruise?

I’ve had it happen both ways... as a refundable OBC and directly back to my credit card. More often the former.
