I have an iphone with verizon. I've read several responses on here to put the phone on airplane mode to avoid other charges. How can apps like whatsapp or facebook messenger work while on airplane mode since it shuts off wifi. Also how much did it cost for a week long cruise?

Turn on airplane mode, then turn wifi back on. Then WhatsApp (or whatever app you want to use) will work. Additionally, if your phone supports wfif calling, turn that on also (before you get on the ship, actually) and you can also call and text while on wifi. I actually just leave wifi calling on all the time anyway.

As long as you are in airplane mode on the ship, you're not using your data plan, so you should be good to go. I just got off a Caribbean cruise doing this and was able to talk/text/email etc. with no problem and no extra charges.
