Best way to get to Cape Liberty from Manhattan

Hi,

We (2) are planning on going with the Anthem from Cape Liberty in July, and will most likely fly to JFK and stay at a hotel in Manhattan a couple of days prior. What will be the easiest, quickest, and best transport from there to the port? Or will it be better to fly to Newark, and/or find a nearby hotel?

Thank you.

Here's my response when you posted this on the main RCL board - http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2463835

Yes - please post on the East Coast Departures forum and include exact dates, hotel budget, number of people, bed size you can live with, and sightseeing objectives in NYC. Flying through Newark is suggested, particularly on the return leg. Manhattan hotels can be very expensive, which is why many folks choose to stay in NJ and take the train and/or PATH to get into Manhattan.

As Bob said transportation can be complicated and expensive. Car service between NY and NJ (instead of cabs) is recommended. Car service from Cape Liberty to JFK can run $120+. Car service from Manhattan to Cape Liberty can run $100+. Taxi from JFK to Manhattan runs about $75. Newark to Cape Liberty runs $55-65. There are less expensive public transit, train, and airport bus options that are accessible with luggage.

For you this is a DIY project to figure out what's best for you in terms of time, money and stress. Exact dates and hotel budget are critical - Manhattan hotels are running about $300+, but there can be summer deals depending on the date and day of the week - weekends are cheaper. Please provide the details so that folks can give you constructive suggestions.

Newark is the airport of choice to sail on Anthem. IMO you have to be saving some serious $$$ to mess with LGA and JFK, particularly on the return leg of the trip because car service transportation can easily eat up any flight cost savings and add time and stress.

Thanks for your reply.

I think the hotel prices in Manhattan is irrelevant, as the question is about the transport from Manhattan.

The date is either July 6 or 20. We are flying in from Europe, and plan on spending some time in Manhattan either before or after the cruise.

Get your best deal on your preferred airline. Either JFK or EWR is fine. If you fly into EWR a car service is recommended. JFK a yellow medallion taxi, car service or Uber are all reliable.

Thanks for more details - it's very helpful to know where folks are coming from and what their primary concerns are. The vast majority of Anthem sailers are flying domestically and many go into total sticker shock over the Manhattan hotel prices. As Got2Cruise said, your two airport choices are JFK and EWR. EWR is closer to Manhattan and only about 10 miles from Cape Liberty.

The two car services that we recommend are Dial7 and Carmellimo because they have large fleets of cars and are used by cruisers as well as New Yorkers on a regular basis. You can get quotes online to see what the various prices would be and compare them to the estimates I posted previously. There are also online coupons. The car service will give you a base rate and hopefully an estimate of tolls. A tip of 18-20% is expected on the base rate. The tunnel toll between NJ and NY is currently $15 and may be charged between NY and NJ if your car has to return to NY after a NJ dropoff. For NJ there will be a few dollars of tolls on the NJ Turnpike. If JFK is involved, there could be extra tolls for the East River tunnels.

EWR to Manhattan is an interstate trip. If the Uber or taxi driver is licensed in NJ and not licensed in NY, the return trip is without paying passengers (deadhead). The large car services are licensed at the state level in multiple states, not the town or city level, so they can deploy their vehicles more efficiently and that can be reflected in their prices.

Traffic is also a big consideration in the NY metro area. The price of a "last minute" booking can reflect this. When you book a car service, they quote a fixed base price based on what they expect the traffic conditions to be on a certain date and time. If you get caught in a traffic mess, the meter is not ticking on your ride.

Per Uber's website they can and do pick up at Newark (EWR) Airport and go into Manhattan. Suggest prices are listed

https://www.uber.com/airports/ewr/

Lyft/Uber in NYC have to be licensed by the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission which has license/car/insurance (commercial) minimums, they have a TLC Sticker displayed on the window and TLC license displayed in the car.

This is new and great news! I won't feel guilty not picking DH up from the airport!

Not sure if this qualifies for easiest, quickest or best, but cheapest way to go (considering that you're in one of the most expensive cities in the world) from Manhattan to Cape Liberty would be to take the PATH train ($2.75 per ride) from either NY Penn Station at 33rd St. or World Trade Center downtown, to Newark Penn Station. Then Uber to the cruise port ($20 per car UberX). A party of four could be all in for under $50. Now... there may be some aggravation involved schlepping your luggage through train stations and all, and you may have to upgrade to XL or SUV, but it could be done.

The easiest way would be to get a limo and hand him your black Amex card as he schlepps your luggage in to the trunk. If that's how you roll... power to you. ;p

Could you price Uber from Exchange Place or Grove St in Jersey City to Cape Liberty? If the price is comparable there is no need to go all the way west to Newark Penn Station to come back to Bayonne.

From midtown PATH leaves from Herald Square between 32nd & 33rd on 6th Ave. Uber could be cost effective for more than two people, but the absolute cheapest fir 1 or two people is to go to Hoboken from 33rd St or Exchange Place from World Trade and take the Hudson-Bergen light rail to 34th St Bayonne for $2.25/pp and then call Uber for a ride into the port, which should be $10 or less. PATH and light rail are totally accessible with luggage and seats are not an issue outbound from Manhattan in the morning.

Now you're at "EXPERT" level!

Even better two ways:

PATH from 33rd St to Grove St. and UberX to the port for an estimated $13-17

PATH from WTC to Exchange Pl - Light Rail to 34th St. Bayonne - Uber to the port $6-9

You're welcome. I have done all these variations to get to and from Cape Liberty with luggage. I just haven't tried Uber yet. Leaving Cape Liberty the taxi dispatcher offers a $6 shuttle to the light rail station, but you might have to wait for the shuttle to fill.

Great information. I guess there is no shuttle from the light rail to Cape Liberty? Why would the shuttle only be for the return? Is it a security issue? I would rather deal with a shuttle than Uber.

Not enough folks use the light rail to get to Cape Liberty to support regular shuttle service. The taxi dispatcher provides shared shuttle service in the local area to the light rail for disembarking cruisers and to the local shopping center for crew and B2Bers. Inbound you can call one of the Bayonne taxi companies. It's not necessarily a fast pickup or departure. The big money is in the trips to EWR and Manhattan.

This is our plan in November

Add one more option. 33rd St. PATH to Hoboken $2.75. Light Rail to Bayonne 34th St for $2.25. Uber to port - $6-9

Grove St has stairs, so not optimal.

Will report back to you in December after our cruise and let you how it went.

I see no one has suggested Ground Link. We used them for a party of 4 this past September to Cape Liberty from Manhattan. Cost with top and tolls was about $140.00. It was very convenient. Driver was professional and the vehicle was very clean.

This option has not been mentioned probably because the large car service fleets like Dial7 and Carmellimo price out at less money.

Has anyone priced a Uber from Exchange Place to Cape Liberty? Or is it better to just take the Light Rail?

I think that's a decision you could make on the fly. Price range shows as $11-19 from Exchange Place. You have to be sure to take the 8th St Bayonne light rail to get off at 34th St Bayonne. Outbound light rail train will be very empty on a cruise morning.
