Dress for Coastal Kitchen Question

Our first time in a full suite, so first time dinning in Coastal Kitchen. My husband asked me what the dress code is for meals here. Is he able to wear shorts at all for any meals? I am assuming he needs to wear pants for dinner, but I wasn’t sure about breakfast and lunch. Only 9 more days until we sail on the Allure for our first Oasis class ship! We are both very excited for this cruise. Thank you for you help

No dress suggestions are enforced, you can wear whatever you want.

We dress for dinner as if we are going to a nice white table cloth restaurant on land. And CK is what I think of as a nice elegant white table cloth restaurant.

But that is just us. It's a personal preference. :)

We love CK and find it is the one change they made on Oasis that lures us back. :)

As noted - anything goes. but......White table cloth?? Not on Oasis, not even for dinner. They use plastic woven placemats. OP is going on Allure so that might be different.

LOL...sorry it's just a term in the restaurant business for a fine dining place.

Just like asking for a "two top". ;)

I appreciate all the replies. My husband and I have done the formal night thing so many times and are really done with it. We will not go in looking like bums, especially at night, but he is grateful he will not have to wear pants to breakfast and lunch at least! He may even wear nice shorts and a polo to a couple dinners, but will probably wear dockers and a polo most nights.

Sorry - thanks.

In fact - we were surprised there were no table clothes, especially at dinner. Guess they are trying to be chic.

And I need to get out of the "old school" terms and start calling it "fine dining" instead of "white table cloth". Or would that be chic dining? I like that one too! :D

I wore shorts and t-shirts for breakfast and jeans or dockers with a polo shirt for dinner, no one will give you strange looks. You will love CK, last November on Allure we ate dinner every night and most breakfast there. We felt like we spent a lot of the cruise in the Suite Lounge or CK, LOL. If Memis is still the CK manager, he is great. Enjoy and I am jealous.

Better ask before you go. Here is my story.

We were on Harmony in April as Star Class patrons. One night, my wife was a little queasy and did not want dinner. Myself and my two teenage boys decided to eat "local" at KC. I just was not into pants that night and wore decent shorts. We had eaten at KC on Oasis twice without issue.

However, when our Genie escorted us to KC, the hostess refused to seat us until we changed into pants. I told the Genie we would head down to Johnny Rockets (burger/shakes sounded good at this point). While down at JR, the Asst Head of Restaurants found us there to apologize and that since we are Star Class, that we could dine at KC as we were.

Next morning at KC for breakfast, the Head of Restaurants found us (how? - was my picture on a wall at this point) and apologized again and offered Wonderland (made no sense since specialty dining is included in Star anyhow).

The next morning, our Genie brought the Head Chef of KC over to us. She apologized and said that she would have served us even if we came in naked. She gave us a personally guided tour of the gallies later that afternoon and specially made filet mignon for lunch.

Our Genie was embarrassed greatly over everything and had different gifts in our cabin and a couples mani/pedi for our anniversary. (My first mani or pedi by the way. Not bad. Would do again only on a cruise.)

I had explained my experience on the survey, but never heard from corporate. I would have thought that being refused service at KC as a Star Class would have triggered a follow up.

Moral of the story is to ask before hand.

Thank you for posting this. It sheds light on several things.

We eat almost all of our meals in the various Coastal Kitchens and have seen a few people in shorts on most nights. On a few nights we have worn shorts but not on nights that the ship has Formal Night.

The guests in Coastal Kitchen do not appear to mind (if they even notice) guests in shorts.

Again, thank you for posting your experience...it was good to read that the staff bent over backwards to make up for an awkward situation.

I have worn nice shorts and collared shirt most nights. But wear dress pants on formal night. I have seen people wear shorts every night even formal nights. Wear what you feel comfortable with is my opinion.

I could have sworn there were white table clothes on allure ck last june and oct.

The "dress code" on Royal Caribbean lists Coastal Kitchen as "Smart Casual" for dinner. That is pants and collared shirt. As many have stated, they usually won't say a word, but obviously did one night. Personal choice, we did Oasis 2 weeks ago and were Sky class. When I had breakfast or lunch in CK, I wore a collared shirt and shorts. I did see many t shirts and shorts, so no big deal. But for dinner I only saw pants and collared shirts. Didn't do dinner every night, but when we did, that was my experience. Same with the Suite Lounge during happy hour. They request "smart casual" but there is often a mix. I saw one guy in a "wife beater" shirt and gym shorts. IMHO that's a bit "casual" for the Suite Lounge during Happy Hour. But....

Anyway, in the above post about the Star Class passenger being turned away. For me, I'd be terribly upset about putting a Royal Caribbean employee in a position of actually doing his job but getting in trouble for it. I realize the Shacky316 never intended to do this, but something we should consider when deciding to dress in something that is not acceptable according the the Dress Code. There has been much discussion about "if Royal Caribbean doesn't enforce the dress code, then they don't really mean it." Then we read of an incident where the dress code WAS enforced and the employee's job was possibly in jeopardy. For me, I simply dress according to the suggested dress code so as not to put an employee in such a precarious position.

Just my opinion.

Thank you all for your opinions and experiences. Jim was excited to hear some of you wore shorts to dinner, however, I will probably win the battle and he will be wearing pants! After 45 years of being married he has learned not to argue with me about certain things! We are off on Sunday and cannot wait!

We just got off the Oasis two weeks ago. Dress nightly in coastal kitchen after around 730 was 90% slacks and collared shirt. We ate on first formal night and had reservations for 800 nightly. I had a long sleeve dress shirt and dockers. Captain paid a visit around 830 after he had pictures taken on promenade earlier, visit at each table and ate next to our table with several others. Only about 25 at that time. Don't miss the Filet on day one menu. Bob & Nancy

Because you were in Star Class you could wear whatever you wanted? I'm sorry but the "class" you are or are not in should have nothing to do with what you WEAR IMO.

When you pay 46,000 for a suite for 7 days. I don’t want to be told by anyone what to wear. Or do. And definitely not by some pinnacle guest in a inside cabin. There good at complaining about everything. Not all but some. IMO.

In coastal kitchen you can wear what ever you want. You paid for that privilege by being in a full suite. I wear shorts and a t-shirt most of the time. And don't care what others think.

You can wear what ever you want but the email from the concierge states long pants are to be worn for dinner. Whether it is enforced is another questions.

We always sail in suites but what I pay still has no bearing on what is or isn’t required.
