Hapag Lloyd management disappointed us.

Medium/small ship Europa2 had a goodly number of LGBT passengers in February.

When our newly met younger German friends requested some kind of organized get together it did not seem a big deal!

The matter was referred to HQ in Hamburg, and the answer was NO. "Other passenger may be made jealous".

Seemed odd on such a friendly ship but I know "Get together/Meetings" do not happen on all ships.

  • 2 weeks later...

I've not sailed on Hapag, but have been on several other upper end lines and the approach seems to be similar across this segment of the market. We currently sail 2-4 weeks a year with Oceania, but have found the same scenario with Sea Dream Yacht Club and Silversea. Oceania used to have an organised FoD Meet and Mingle, but found that when they were well attended much of the crowd just came along for the party and didn't fit under the LGBT umbrella, whilst on other evenings turnout was very low despite high numbers of LGBT passengers on board. One crossing we did on Regatta in 2012 the LGBT passengers made up some 20% of the passenger mix, no FoD meetings were organised, and there really was no need as everyone was mixing. It's certainly nothing negative from Oceania as one of their founders is openly gay, and they were the first line to allow same sex couples amongst the crew to cohabit.

Maybe something has just been lost in translation and H-L are merely encouraging all passengers to mix??

We've looked closely at Hapag, particularly Europa 2, but nothing has worked for us itinerary wise until now...

PS Nice to see a Glasgow neighbour on here :-)
